Australians Who Worked in the UK

Your Working Holiday Left Something Behind. Your UK Pension.

If you worked in the UK after 2012 you were automatically enrolled in a workplace pension, even on a temporary visa. Most Australians never claim it when they return home.

Why Australians Have Forgotten UK Pensions

The UK has been one of the most popular working holiday destinations for Australians for decades. Whether you pulled pints in a London pub, worked in recruitment, or landed a corporate role in the City, if your employer was UK-based, they were legally required to enrol you in a workplace pension after 2012. Many Australians work in the UK for two to five years and return home without ever thinking about these pension contributions again.

NEST and Auto-Enrolment

NEST (National Employment Savings Trust) is the UK's default auto-enrolment pension scheme. Many Australians on working holiday visas were enrolled in NEST without realising it, contributions were deducted from their pay automatically. These small pots add up over time, and NEST does not proactively contact former members at overseas addresses.

How We Search

Our Country Pension Identification Report ($99) searches HMRC's Pension Tracing Service, cross-references Companies House employer records, and determines UK regulatory entitlement. At Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier ($499) we prepare a complete request pack for each fund we identify, written and ready to send under your signed Information Request Authority (IRA), so you don't need to navigate UK bureaucracy from Australia.

Two-Way Search

If you're Australian and also worked in the UK, you may have entitlements in both countries. PensionHunter can search Australian superannuation and UK pensions with our multi-country search. Check our Australia page for more on unclaimed super.

Frequently Asked Questions

Possibly. Auto-enrolment applies to workers earning over $13,000 per year (approximately $1,050 per month). Even if you only worked for a few months, if your monthly earnings exceeded this threshold your employer was required to enrol you. The contributions may be small, but they're still yours.

We report back within five working days of your intake form with a full summary of every pension entitlement we identify. Full refund if we find nothing material.
