EPF mandatory

If you worked in Malaysia and moved on, changed employers, or lost the paperwork years ago, you are in the right place. Pensions are rarely gone. Most of the time the scheme simply lost track of you.

Why Malaysian pensions go missing, and what a Pension Identification Report finds

Malaysia is simpler than most countries in one respect: contributions run into EPF, one national fund. The difficulty is reaching it. The account is keyed to Malaysian identity details and local access, and people who worked in Malaysia and then left commonly do not have either any more. The balance stays where it is. The person stops being able to see it.

A PensionHunter Pension Identification Report works from what you already know, employer names and rough dates, and identifies the account records and administrators your Malaysian work history points to. One fixed fee, one clear picture, and a refund if we find nothing material.

What we search

  • EPF (Employees Provident Fund), KWSP database
  • Private Retirement Schemes (PRS)
  • Occupational pension schemes
  • EIS (Employment Insurance System) entitlements

Worked in Malaysia and moved back home?

If you worked in Malaysia as a foreign worker, you had EPF contributions deducted from your salary. This money belongs to you and can be withdrawn when you leave. Many workers have never claimed it.

What your Pension Identification Report delivers

PensionHunter is a team of pension researchers working across 41 countries. We do not touch your money, we take no percentage, and every report is reviewed by a human before release.

Or do it yourself, here's what that takes

Doing it yourself

Means working through all of this:

  • Tracking down employers that merged, rebranded, or wound up
  • Navigating EPF/KWSP records separately
  • Writing to each provider and waiting weeks for replies
  • Working out which entitlements you actually have, in Malaysia's system

What we do

Human experts + AI, fixed fee:

  • Registry searches across the public systems that apply to you (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • Employer tracing through decades of corporate change (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • A written shortlist of the schemes most likely to hold your entitlement, pay $99, see findings, then decide (refunded if nothing material)
  • Decide after the Pension Identification Report: act on the shortlist yourself, or go further. Search, $499: a complete request pack for every fund we identify, written in your voice and ready to send, within five working days of your intake form. Global, $799: the same across every country you worked in, up to all 41 we cover, within ten working days.

Identification only. We do not claim, transfer, negotiate, or make decisions regarding any pension.

Why it matters

EPF money does not follow the generic 7-year unclaimed rule, it keeps earning dividends and transfers to the Registrar (BWTD) only at age 100 under EPF Act s.51A.

If you do nothing

The EPF balance keeps earning dividends until age 100; only then does it transfer to BWTD (searchable via eGUMIS). It is not lost on departure.

Deadlines that matter in Malaysia

  • EPF age-100 transfer: Age 100 → transfer to the Registrar (BWTD) under EPF Act s.51A (hard, automatic)

How records are reached

Personal-record access wall: i-Akaun (KWSP login) is the personal-record wall; the in-app approval can replace SMS-TAC for users still able to authenticate

Malaysia is unusual in that provider identity is trivial, there is one national fund (EPF), with a separate route to the BWTD registrar only for accounts that have crossed the age-100 transfer threshold. The hard part is not finding the institution; it is that EPF money does not behave like generic unclaimed money, it keeps earning dividends and never lapses on departure.

From abroad: A Leaving-Country Withdrawal is filable from abroad, but onward international remittance of the payout is unclear in published EPF guidance, a known gap for departed expats rather than a documented route.

How do I find a forgotten pension in Malaysia?

To find a lost EPF account in Malaysia, you can check the KWSP (EPF) website or visit an EPF office, but this requires a Malaysian IC number and local access. For foreign workers and expats who have left Malaysia, PensionHunter researches likely EPF entitlements using your employment history; at Enhanced Pension Identification Report ($499) and Global Pension Identification Report ($799), we prepare a complete request pack for each fund we identify, written and ready to send under your signed Information Request Authority (IRA). Country Pension Identification Report ($99) is identification-only and does not require an IRA. Malaysia has required EPF contributions since 1951. Important: EPF withdrawals, particularly for foreign workers leaving Malaysia permanently, are administered directly by KWSP under strict documentary requirements. We do not make withdrawal applications for you and we cannot guarantee approval. We deliver a research report so you can apply to KWSP yourself. Full refund if we find nothing material.
