Why this happens
Schemes do not lose the money. They lose the person.
A pension is opened in your name. You move on, and then you move house. The scheme writes to an address you left years ago. The employer is bought, renamed or wound up, and the scheme passes to an administrator you have never heard of. Nothing is stolen and nothing expires. The file sits there with an address that stopped working.
That is why people who are certain they have nothing turn out to have something.

A pension is usually opened for you, not by you. Formal employment is often enough. Nobody asks whether you meant to have one.

We correspond regularly with national pension authorities and publish what they say
Eighteen authorities have engaged with us in writing so far. A study of all 52 systems in our index publishes on Thursday 1 October 2026.
Every entry carries the date we last checked it. Any institution can correct anything we publish about it, at any time, and corrections go up in full, attributed and dated, beside the original entry.
Our research has been covered in the press, and our open letter and releases are published in full.
We publish what institutions tell us, whether or not the answer helps us.
