  • Refund if nothing material

If you worked in the UK and moved on, changed employers, or lost the paperwork years ago, you are in the right place. Pensions are rarely gone. Most of the time the scheme simply lost track of you.

People who worked in the UK and now live elsewhere, people who changed employers so often the paperwork stopped following them, and people searching for a parent or partner.

Why UK pensions go missing, and what a Pension Identification Report finds

British employers merge, get bought, and dissolve, and each time the scheme behind them can change name, administrator, or hands entirely. The official tracing service gives you a scheme's contact details, but only if you already know exactly who to ask for. Your State Pension position is a separate entitlement again.

A PensionHunter Pension Identification Report works from what you actually remember, employer names and rough dates, and identifies the schemes, administrators, and state entitlement your work history points to, even where the employer no longer exists. One fixed fee, one clear picture, and a refund if we find nothing material.

If you were in a UK company pension scheme between May 1990 and April 1997, the scheme may owe you arrears from the GMP equalisation rulings, even if you transferred out.

The UK pensions dashboard is not open to the public. Schemes must connect by October 2026, but no launch date for people is set. Today, nobody can look themselves up.

A free government service is available at gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details . It tells you who to contact. PensionHunter goes further by searching registries, tracing employers, and preparing a complete information request for every fund we identify, written and ready to send.

PensionHunter is a team of pension researchers working across 41 countries. We do not touch your money, we take no percentage, and every report is reviewed by a human before release.

Or do it yourself, here's what that takes

Doing it yourself

Means working through all of this:

  • Tracking down employers that merged, rebranded, or wound up
  • Navigating HMRC's Pension Tracing Service and Companies House employer records separately
  • Writing to each provider and waiting weeks for replies
  • Working out which entitlements you actually have, in the UK's system

What we do

Human experts + AI, fixed fee:

  • Registry searches across the public systems that apply to you (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • Employer tracing through decades of corporate change (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • A written shortlist of the schemes most likely to hold your entitlement, pay $99, see findings, then decide (refunded if nothing material)
  • Decide after the Pension Identification Report: act on the shortlist yourself, or go further. Search, $499: a complete request pack for every fund we identify, written in your voice and ready to send, within five working days of your intake form. Global, $799: the same across every country you worked in, up to all 41 we cover, within ten working days.

Identification only. We do not claim, transfer, negotiate, or make decisions regarding any pension.

Verified country facts

Every line below is drawn from the verified country dossier. We never fabricate facts; candidate items are gated out of customer-facing copy.

Why it matters

The April-2026 voluntary-NI regime change: cheap Class 2 from abroad is abolished and a one-time transitional door (old rules, incl. Class-2 payers switching without the 10-year residence test) has its own closing date, confirmed by the Future Pension Centre.

If you do nothing

The cheap voluntary-NI window lapses at the transitional door; outside it, only the standard 6-year backdating remains and older years fall away year by year. Workplace pots are preserved (not auto-paid).

Deadlines that matter in the UK

  • Voluntary-NI transitional door: The rules changed in April 2026. A one-time transitional door under the old rules, including existing Class-2 payers switching to Class-3 without the 10-year test, has its own closing date, which the Future Pension Centre confirms on request. Gaps in the record itself can normally be filled for the past six tax years, each with its own deadline, on 5 April.
  • Short-service refund: If you were in a defined-contribution scheme, a refund of your own contributions was only possible if you left within 30 days of joining (for schemes joined after October 2015). If you were in a defined-benefit scheme, a refund was only possible if you were a member for under two years.

How records are reached

Personal-record access wall: Government Gateway (the personal State Pension forecast / NI record)

Companies House and the government's free Pension Tracing Service are both public, PTS returns scheme contact details only, never balances or membership confirmation, and a well-known commercial namesake (pensiontracingservice.com) is not the government service. The genuine difficulty in UK pension lineage is that employers get acquired, schemes get bulk-bought, providers rebrand, and a 1990s payroll deduction can land in a scheme with a name nobody at the original employer would recognise today.

From abroad: Public records and PTS work from anywhere without your credentials; the personal state-pension forecast needs Government Gateway, and HMRC's identity checks can be hard to pass from overseas. The harder problem from abroad isn't the gateway, it's that scheme-name continuity in the UK breaks repeatedly across decades, and reading that history is what the work actually is.

Cross-border

Many bilateral/reciprocal agreements; post-Brexit EU-UK protocol preserves aggregation. Where you retire decides whether your UK State Pension rises each year or freezes at its first payment for life. Australia, Canada and New Zealand freeze it; the USA does not.

Questions people ask before they start

Should I just use the free government service instead?

Yes, and we recommend trying it. The free service tells you who to contact. It does not trace employers through mergers and renames, and it does not search across borders. PensionHunter searches registries, identifies the right providers, and delivers a full written report. Country Pension Identification Report $99, Enhanced $499, Global Pension Identification Report ($799). Full refund if we find nothing material.

Do I need my National Insurance number to start?

It helps significantly but is not essential. We can search with your name, date of birth and employer history. Your NI number speeds up the process with most providers.

How long will a UK pension search take?

Your Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier report arrives within five working days of your intake form. At Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier we prepare a complete request pack for each identified UK provider under your signed Information Request Authority (IRA), written and ready for you to send. Providers typically take 4 to 12 weeks to respond, and we answer your questions by email about whatever comes back, on your workplace and state pension alike, for as long as your case is open.

Was I contracted out, and why does it matter?

Your State Pension forecast shows if you were contracted out, and payslips from before April 2016 with NI letters D, E, L, N or O prove it. If you were, your forecast includes a deduction called COPE, and the workplace scheme that contracted you out is supposed to make up that slice. That turns a remembered job into a dated pension question worth asking.
