If you worked in Hong Kong and moved on, changed employers, or lost the paperwork years ago, you are in the right place. Pensions are rarely gone. Most of the time the scheme simply lost track of you.

Expats who worked in Hong Kong on employment visas, workers who left Hong Kong without consolidating MPF accounts, and people who changed jobs frequently, each employer creates a new MPF account.

Why Hong Kong pensions go missing, and what a Pension Identification Report finds

MPF is compulsory from the first month of employment, and each employer enrols you with the trustee it has chosen. Several employers means several accounts, held by several trustees, and nothing consolidates them for you. Hong Kong is a city people pass through, so those accounts are very often left behind by someone who has since moved to another country entirely.

A PensionHunter Pension Identification Report works from what you already know, employer names and rough dates, and identifies the schemes, trustees and administrators your Hong Kong work history points to. One fixed fee, one clear picture, and a refund if we find nothing material.

What we search in Hong Kong

  • MPFA, Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority register
  • All registered MPF trustees, HSBC, AIA, Manulife, Sun Life, BCT, Hang Seng, Bank Consortium and all others

Or do it yourself, here's what that takes

Doing it yourself

Means working through all of this:

  • Tracking down employers that merged, rebranded, or wound up
  • Navigating MPF schemes and the MPFA separately
  • Writing to each provider and waiting weeks for replies
  • Working out which entitlements you actually have, in Hong Kong's system

What we do

Human experts + AI, fixed fee:

  • Registry searches across the public systems that apply to you (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • Employer tracing through decades of corporate change (Country Pension Identification Report)
  • A written shortlist of the schemes most likely to hold your entitlement, pay $99, see findings, then decide (refunded if nothing material)
  • Decide after the Pension Identification Report: act on the shortlist yourself, or go further. Search, $499: a complete request pack for every fund we identify, written in your voice and ready to send, within five working days of your intake form. Global, $799: the same across every country you worked in, up to all 41 we cover, within ten working days.

Identification only. We do not claim, transfer, negotiate, or make decisions regarding any pension.

Why it matters

The MPFA Unclaimed-Benefits register + the newly centralised eMPF platform make a departed expat’s scattered MPF pots (one per job by default) findable in one place, and there is no escheat ever, only erosion.

If you do nothing

~6.5M left-behind personal accounts wait indefinitely, no escheat ever, money simply erodes via fees; the permanent-departure early-withdrawal is once-only per lifetime (the returnee trap).

Deadlines that matter in Hong Kong

  • The 1 May 2025 transition date decides what can be offset: Since 1 May 2025 employers can no longer offset severance or long service payments against MPF contributions for service after that date. Benefits from service before 1 May 2025 can still be offset, so the date you left and the date your benefits accrued decide what you keep.Source: Labour Department op.labour.gov.hk; MPFA, checked 30 July 2026
  • Claim deadline: No statutory claim deadlines, no forfeiture, erosion only
  • Permanent-departure ground: Once-only per lifetime, register-cross-checked; PD evidence requirements

How records are reached

Personal-record access wall: eMPF / trustee logins

eMPF (newly centralised, register quality gold-and-unified); MPFA Unclaimed-Benefits register

From abroad: Hong Kong has historically been one of the more forgiving markets for offshore identity verification, but the permanent-departure early-withdrawal is once-only per lifetime and register-cross-checked, the trap is the returnee who triggers it and later moves back.

Cross-border

HK↔UK, HK↔CA, HK↔AU (BN(O)/emigration-wave corridors).

MPF contribution rules

Every employer in Hong Kong must contribute 5% of salary to MPF for every employee, including expats on employment visas. Employees also contribute 5%. Even a 6 month contract creates an MPF account. Most expats who worked in Hong Kong have at least one forgotten account.

Permanent departure withdrawal

Expats who have permanently left Hong Kong and have no intention of returning can apply for early withdrawal of their MPF accrued benefits. This requires specific documentation and application to the MPFA. Our researchers identify your accounts and provide the information you need to act.

Questions people ask before they start

I only worked in Hong Kong for 6 months, do I have an MPF account?

Yes. MPF contributions are mandatory from the first month of employment with no minimum period. Even short contracts create accounts. Your employer was legally required to enrol you.

Can I withdraw my MPF if I have left Hong Kong permanently?

Yes. Permanent departure from Hong Kong is one of the grounds for early MPF withdrawal. You need to provide evidence of permanent departure and complete an application to your MPF trustee. We identify your accounts and provide full claiming guidance.

I had multiple jobs in Hong Kong, do I have multiple MPF accounts?

Very likely yes. Each employer creates a separate MPF account. Workers with multiple jobs in Hong Kong frequently have 3-5 separate accounts they have never consolidated. We find all of them.

How do I find a forgotten pension in Hong Kong?

To find a lost MPF account in Hong Kong, you need to contact each MPF trustee separately, which means tracing every employer you worked for and identifying which trustee they used. The MPFA publishes a list of all approved trustees and schemes. PensionHunter researches MPF trustees using your employment history; at Enhanced Pension Identification Report ($499) and Global Pension Identification Report ($799), we prepare a complete request pack for each fund we identify, written and ready to send under your signed Information Request Authority (IRA). Country Pension Identification Report ($99) is identification-only and does not require an IRA. If you have permanently left Hong Kong, you may be eligible to withdraw your MPF accrued benefits.
