How to Find a Forgotten Irish Pension After Moving Abroad

If you worked in Ireland and moved abroad, there is a strong chance you have a forgotten Irish pension waiting to be claimed. Ireland's pension system includes multiple types of retirement savings, and expats frequently lose track of them after emigrating.

## Finding a Lost Irish Pension, The Challenge for Expats

Ireland has three main types of pension: the State Pension (Contributory), occupational pension schemes offered by employers, and Personal Retirement Savings Accounts (PRSAs). If you worked in Ireland for any period you may have entitlements in one or more of these.

The State Pension is based on your PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) contribution record. Even a few years of Irish employment can count towards a partial State Pension entitlement, and these contributions do not expire. You can check your contribution record through the Department of Social Protection.

## Occupational Schemes and PRSAs

Occupational pension schemes are employer-sponsored and vary widely. When you leave an employer your pension typically stays with the scheme trustee or is transferred to a buyout bond. If you left Ireland without arranging a transfer, your pension is likely still sitting with the original provider.

PRSAs are personal pension accounts that follow you between jobs, but only if you keep track of them. If you changed address without updating your PRSA provider, they may have lost contact with you.

## Why Emigration Complicates Claiming

Once you leave Ireland, pension statements go to your old address. Providers change names, Irish Life, Zurich, Aviva and New Ireland have all undergone mergers and rebranding. Without actively tracking your pension, it effectively disappears from view. The Pensions Authority estimates that hundreds of thousands of Irish pension accounts have lost contact with their owners.

## How to Search for a Lost Irish Pension

Start with the Pensions Authority register which maintains a database of occupational schemes. For PRSAs, contact Revenue or your former employer. For State Pension entitlements, request your PRSI record from the Department of Social Protection.
