How to Find a UK Pension When You Live Abroad

If you need to find a UK pension living abroad, you are not alone. Millions of people who worked in Britain now live overseas, and many have lost contact with pension schemes they contributed to during their UK employment. The Association of British Insurers reports 3.3 million forgotten UK pension pots worth a combined $34 billion, and a large share belongs to expats who moved away and never transferred or consolidated their savings.

Why UK pensions get lost when you move abroad

UK pension providers send letters to your last known address. When you move overseas, these letters go undelivered. Over time, your pension provider may mark your account as "gone away" and stop attempting contact. The pension itself remains intact, your money does not disappear, but without active communication, you lose visibility of what you have.

Changing your name, getting married, or using a different name in your new country adds another layer of complexity. If the name on your pension records does not match your current identity documents, even direct enquiries can be difficult.

What you need to search for a UK pension from overseas

  • Your full name as it appeared on UK employment records
  • Date of birth
  • UK National Insurance number (helpful but not essential)
  • Names and approximate dates of UK employers
  • Any previous UK addresses

The UK Pension Tracing Service

The UK government operates a free Pension Tracing Service that can provide contact details for pension schemes based on employer names. However, it does not actively search for you, contact providers, or confirm whether you have an entitlement. For someone living abroad, following up on multiple leads across different UK schemes is impractical.
