One
Mandatory maganyugdijpenztar membership ceased on 3 November 2010. A member could declare, up to 31 January 2011, that they wished to stay in the fund. Absent that declaration, membership terminated by force of law and the person returned to the social security pension system. Since 1 January 2015 a fund member not yet drawing a state pension may at any time elect to return to the state system for a full-amount pension.
Consequence. A deadline with an adverse default. Anyone already emigrated was not in Hungary in January 2011, never saw the notice, almost certainly made no declaration, and was moved back into the state system without acting, while someone who did declare still has a live fund account. Neither is likely to know which they are. The MNB register still carries maganyugdijpenztar as a live category, so the first question for anyone who worked in Hungary between 1998 and 2010 is whether a fund still holds their account.
Two
Before award nothing is automatic: the pension is awarded on application, and the Treasury states the register statement can be initiated at any time, by the citizen. After award the direction reverses. Every March NYUFIG posts a data-reconciliation form to beneficiaries abroad, to be returned within one month of receipt, and if it is late, payment is suspended. Beneficiaries in Australia and Germany are exempt because the authorities reconcile directly.
Consequence. A pension that stopped arriving after a move abroad has usually been suspended over a missed March letter to an old address, not cancelled. That is fixable, and it is time-sensitive.

Three
Entitlement arises at age 65 with at least 20 years of szolgalati ido, service time. With under 20 but at least 15 years, the entitlement is the oregsegi resznyugdij, the partial old-age pension. Retirement age is 65 for those born in 1957 and later, and graduated between roughly 62 and 65 for earlier cohorts.
Consequence. 15 years is the real floor, reachable using periods from other countries, so a short Hungarian stint is often still worth money.
Under EU coordination, time lived, worked or insured in another EU country can count when Hungarian benefits are calculated, per the European Commission guide.
Bilateral agreement countries work differently.
That time counts only where Hungarian service time alone is not enough, and the pension is then pro-rated, Hungarian time over total. We do not list the agreement countries here, because the completeness and currency of the Treasury list were not established. Read the list at the source.

Service time also covers sick pay, child care support, nursing allowance, rehabilitation benefit, former compulsory military service, apprenticeship and pre-1998 full-time higher education. Self-employed years count only where the contribution was actually paid.

Three records exist. Asking for the wrong one costs months.
The extract of the register data: the service-time record, built from employer-reported data, and initiable at any time.
The reconciliation procedure, in which the authority clarifies recognisable service time with the insured person. It is the stronger of the two, because it ends in a decision, and that page lists a request form for people abroad or with foreign service time.

The contribution account, which holds data only from 1 January 2013.
On forms.
We publish no form number, code, file name or PDF link. Every Treasury PDF returned HTTP 403 in research and the form titles come only from link text, so each form is described in words here and only the parent page is linked. Ask the office for the form by description.
On magyarorszag.hu, under Nyugdij, then Egyeb szolgaltatasok, then the contribution account, with Ugyfelkapu Plus or the DAP application, dap.gov.hu. Since 16 January 2025 electronic identification is impossible without one of those two, so an old plain Ugyfelkapu login no longer works.

The Treasury states matters can be handled in person or by post, so for a non-resident with no Hungarian phone, address or ID chip, post is the only realistic channel.
Identifier. The TAJ szam, the nine-digit social security number the record is kept under. The card proves only the number.
Cost. No page we reached stated a charge or an exemption, so the fee position must be checked before you rely on it.
Language. Every Treasury pension page and form found is Hungarian only, so assume Hungarian-language help is needed. A document not in an accepted language needs a certified Hungarian translation, arranged and paid for by the applicant.
