Leaving Ireland? Your pension in three steps

MyWelfare: State pension contribution record and welfare entitlements. Emigrants who want to keep their Irish contribution record alive with voluntary contributions must apply within five years of the end of the last year they paid or were credited compulsory insurance.

The official routes come first here. Each line below names its official source and the date we read it. We identify; we do not advise.

1. What to keep before you leave

  • Your PPS number, and a note of the Irish address the Department of Social Protection holds for you.The documented fallback posts a paper statement only if your PPS number, date of birth and the address the Department still holds all match automatically, which is exactly what fails for someone who left years ago.Source: gov.ie and welfare.ie, read 3 October 2026
  • The years in which you paid Irish PRSI.You do not need a full Irish career to be paid something: reduced rates run down a published scale, and the modern calculation divides your total contributions by 2,080 weeks, the 40 year benchmark for a full pension, so each year of Irish PRSI carries a measurable slice of that figure for life.Source: Department of Social Protection SW19 2026 and gov.ie, read 3 October 2026

2. The official route from abroad

  • Ireland pays a State Pension (Contributory) from age 66, funded by the PRSI deducted while you worked there.Source: Department of Social Protection SW19 2026 and gov.ie, read 3 October 2026
  • The online application and an instant copy of your PRSI record need a verified MyGovID account; a verified account needs a Public Services Card and a mobile number verified in person at an Irish Intreo Office; and the Department's published position is that you must be resident in Ireland to be registered for the card and that it will only be issued to an Irish address.Source: gov.ie and welfare.ie, read 3 October 2026
  • The Department states there is a legal onus on you to apply, on its own form, and it recommends applying six months before you want payment to start if you worked in another EU or agreement country.Source: gov.ie and welfare.ie, read 3 October 2026

3. Clocks that start on leaving

From our deadline register and the official sources it cites.

  • State Pension (Contributory) must be applied for within the prescribed time of 3 months from the first date of entitlement.Source: gov.ie, read 1 September 2026
  • Late applications are backdated six months only, except where the Department supplied incorrect information or you were incapacitated by illness, so arrears beyond six months are money that is never paid.Source: gov.ie Operational Guidelines and PRSI SW14 January 2026, read 3 October 2026
