How to find a lost Italian pension from abroad
Italy's public pension system runs through INPS (Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale), which holds a single central contribution record, the estratto conto contributivo (ECOCERT), under your codice fiscale. From abroad, that is the operative document for any state-pension calculation. Occupational pensions sit outside INPS in fondi pensione (fondi negoziali by sector, fondi aperti individually, and pre-existing legacy funds), and there is no central register for those. This guide walks each honestly.
The official route
INPS, estratto conto contributivo (ECOCERT). www.inps.it
INPS is the single central authority for the state contribution record. The ECOCERT (estratto conto certificativo) is the definitive statement of periods and amounts under your codice fiscale, requested through the INPS portal with SPID, CIE, or CNS. INPS's Direzione centrale Convenzioni internazionali handles pensions for members abroad, including EU and bilateral totalisation.
What this route can and cannot do
Route verdict: HUMAN-ONLY
The INPS side is centralised and, when digital identity works from abroad, the ECOCERT is fast. The fondi pensione side is not centralised, each fondo must be identified through the former Italian employer or the sector agreement that applied. PensionHunter does this as prepare-and-guide, with a complete request pack at the Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier, written and ready for the customer to send under a signed Information Request Authority.
Steps you can take yourself
- Find your codice fiscale, on any Italian payslip, tessera sanitaria, or fiscal document.
- Set up SPID (or use CIE / CNS) if you can from abroad; log into MyINPS and request the estratto conto and, where needed, the certified ECOCERT.
- For state pension calculation and totalisation, contact INPS's Direzione centrale Convenzioni internazionali (INPS International).
- For occupational (fondo negoziale) pensions: identify which sector fund applied to each former Italian employer (Cometa for metalworking, Fonchim for chemicals, Fonte for retail, etc.) and contact that fondo.
- For fondi aperti (open funds) or pre-existing legacy funds: contact each identified provider directly.
Where the DIY route stalls
- SPID from abroad, expats without an Italian residency address often struggle to open or maintain SPID; CIE / CNS or a postal route via consulate applies.
- Fondi pensione decentralised, no central register; identification is sector- and employer-specific.
- Sector-agreement changes, the applicable fondo can change with contract renewals; longer histories cross multiple fondi.
- Pre-existing funds (fondi preesistenti), some old bank/insurance-sector funds run under their own rules.
- TFR (severance) treatment, accrued TFR is not a pension but a related entitlement often confused with fondo pensione balances.
Where PensionHunter fits
For Italian traces, PensionHunter's role is bounded and honest:
- INPS (state): prepare-and-guide the ECOCERT and INPS International request from abroad.
- Fondi pensione (occupational): in the Country Pension Identification Report, we identify the applicable fondo per former employer. In the Enhanced Pension Identification Report, we prepare a complete request pack for each identified fondo, written and ready for you to send under your signed Information Request Authority. The deliverable is your Action Pack.
The ECOCERT, the fondo balance, and the INPS calculation always stay with INPS or the fondo. PensionHunter identifies where each sits.
If your career spanned Italy plus other countries, the multi-country search covers every jurisdiction we operate in for a single fee.

Frequently asked
Can I request an ECOCERT from outside Italy?
Yes if you can authenticate with SPID, CIE, or CNS. Where digital identity is not available, INPS accepts postal requests via the Italian consulate.
What is a fondo pensione and why is it separate?
Occupational and open pension funds established under Italian law that sit outside INPS. Each fondo is separately administered; there is no central register.
How does EU totalisation work for Italy?
INPS coordinates with your current country's system under EU regulation when you claim, using each system's contribution record.
What does PensionHunter deliver at the end of an Italian search?
The identified fondo per former employer and (at Search) the complete request pack for each, assembled as your Action Pack. For INPS, prepare-and-guide support.
