How to find a lost Spanish pension from abroad

Spain's state pension system runs through the Seguridad Social. Every contribution is recorded on a single vida laboral report under your número de afiliación (which is linked to your NIE for foreigners). From abroad, that report is the definitive contribution record and the starting point for any state-pension calculation via INSS. Occupational pension plans (planes de pensiones de empleo) sit outside the state system with the gestora chosen by each employer.

The official route

Seguridad Social, vida laboral / informes. portal.seg-social.gob.es

The Seguridad Social portal issues the vida laboral (working life report) and the informe de bases (bases of contribution). Both are the operative documents for a state-pension calculation and are available with a Cl@ve, digital certificate, or SMS-authenticated request against your número de afiliación. INSS (Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social) handles pension eligibility and calculation, including under EU totalisation.

What this route can and cannot do

Route verdict: HUMAN-ONLY

The vida laboral surfaces the state contribution record fast when the digital identity works from abroad. The occupational side (planes de empleo) is not on that portal, those are held by the gestora chosen by each employer, and there is no central register. PensionHunter does this as prepare-and-guide, with a complete request pack at the Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier, written and ready for the customer to send under a signed Information Request Authority.

Steps you can take yourself

  1. Find your número de afiliación (linked to your NIE if you are a foreign national), on any Spanish payslip or Seguridad Social document.
  2. Request the vida laboral via the Seguridad Social portal using Cl@ve, digital certificate, or the SMS route.
  3. Request the informe de bases if you need contribution amounts by year, not just periods.
  4. For state-pension calculation and totalisation with your current country, contact INSS's international area.
  5. For occupational plans (planes de empleo): identify the gestora chosen by each former Spanish employer and contact them directly.

Where the DIY route stalls

  • Cl@ve access from abroad, once your Spanish phone number changes, Cl@ve resets often require in-person or postal action.
  • Occupational plans decentralised, no register; each employer's chosen gestora must be identified separately.
  • Autonomous-community variation, some historic regional caisses complicate the picture on old service.
  • Bilateral / EU totalisation, coordinated by INSS but adds paper flow with your current country's system.
  • Missing periods, reconciliation with former employers is often required before INSS can finalise.

Where PensionHunter fits

For Spanish traces, PensionHunter's role is bounded and honest:

  • State pension: prepare-and-guide the vida laboral, informe de bases, and INSS pension calculation from abroad.
  • Occupational (planes de empleo): in the Country Pension Identification Report, we identify the gestora per former employer. In the Enhanced Pension Identification Report, we prepare a complete request pack for each identified gestora, written and ready for you to send under your signed Information Request Authority. The deliverable is your Action Pack.

The vida laboral, the plan balance, and the INSS calculation always stay with Seguridad Social or the gestora. PensionHunter identifies where each sits.

If your career spanned Spain plus other countries, the multi-country search covers every jurisdiction we operate in for a single fee.

Frequently asked

Is the vida laboral the same as my pension?

No. The vida laboral is the contribution record; the pension amount is calculated by INSS from those contributions when you claim.

Can I request my vida laboral from outside Spain?

Yes, if you hold a working Cl@ve, digital certificate, or a Spanish phone still receiving the SMS code. Otherwise the postal route via the Spanish consulate applies.

What about occupational pension plans?

They sit outside the Seguridad Social portal, with each employer's chosen gestora. There is no central Spanish register for planes de empleo.

What does PensionHunter deliver at the end of a Spanish search?

The identified gestora per former employer and (at Search) the complete request pack for each, assembled as your Action Pack. For state pension, prepare-and-guide support with Seguridad Social / INSS.
