UAE End of Service Gratuity, What Expats Are Owed

End of service gratuity is one of the most important financial rights for workers in the UAE, yet millions of expats leave without claiming the full amount they're owed. If you worked in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or any of the Emirates for at least one year, you are legally entitled to a gratuity payment.

How End of Service Gratuity Works

Under UAE Labour Law, every worker who completes one year of continuous service is entitled to end of service gratuity. The calculation is based on your basic salary: 21 days' pay for each of the first five years, and 30 days' pay for each additional year. The total cannot exceed two years' salary.

Why Expats Miss Out

Many expats leave the UAE in a hurry, visa cancellations, job changes, family emergencies. The gratuity process requires paperwork and coordination with your former employer. If your employer doesn't proactively pay, the money sits unclaimed. Some employers calculate gratuity incorrectly, underpaying workers who don't know their rights.

DIFC and ADGM Schemes

Workers in the DIFC have contributions under the DEWS (Employee Workplace Savings) scheme. ADGM workers may have separate workplace pension contributions. These are in addition to end of service gratuity and are frequently forgotten by workers who have left these financial zones.
