Worked at NatWest in the UK? Your pension probably still exists. The name on your payslip may not.

If you worked for NatWest in the UK, in a branch, at head office or in its investment bank, this page is for you. The name is still on the high street, but the company behind it changed hands in 2000 and the group above it changed its own name in 2020.

What happened

In 1968 National Provincial Bank, with its subsidiary District Bank, and Westminster Bank agreed to merge as National Westminster Bank (Source: NatWest Group Heritage Hub, National Westminster Bank plc, read 27 October 2026). National Westminster Bank commenced trading on 1 January 1970 (Source: NatWest Group Heritage Hub, National Westminster Bank plc, read 27 October 2026). County Bank, originally District Bank's merchant banking subsidiary, acquired stock-broking and jobbing firms to create NatWest Investment Bank (Source: NatWest Group Heritage Hub, National Westminster Bank plc, read 27 October 2026). In 2000 the Royal Bank of Scotland Group acquired National Westminster Bank (Source: NatWest Group Heritage Hub, NatWest Group plc, read 27 October 2026). A later filing by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group dates the NatWest acquisition to 6 March 2000 (Source: The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, prospectus supplement, SEC, read 27 October 2026). In 2020 the name of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group was changed to NatWest Group (Source: NatWest Group Heritage Hub, NatWest Group plc, read 27 October 2026).

Why the trail is hard

The NatWest name stayed on the door while the owner changed, so the name on your payslip and the name on a record today can be the same and still mean different companies. County Bank is described as a subsidiary, so its staff may have had a different employer from the branch staff.

Which era were you in?

The employer's name and owner changed over the years, so the first question is which one you worked for. This holds for the dates in the left column.

Your yearsWho your employer was
Before 1 January 1970National Provincial Bank, District Bank or Westminster Bank
1 January 1970 to 5 March 2000National Westminster Bank
Any year, in the merchant bankCounty Bank, which created NatWest Investment Bank
From 6 March 2000National Westminster Bank, acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group
From 2020The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, renamed NatWest Group

Which pension arrangement applied to you depends on the company that employed you in those years and on your own terms. This page does not name a scheme or say who holds one today. A name that is right for the bank today may not have been right for your years, so we do not guess. Your report names it.

Do I have a pension from my NatWest years?

It depends first on when you left. The law set a minimum, and a scheme could always be more generous than the law.

You leftWhat the law required for a preserved pension
Before 6 April 1975No legal minimum. The scheme's own rules decided.
6 April 1975 to 31 December 1985Aged 26 or over, with at least 5 years' qualifying service
1 January 1986 to 5 April 1988At least 5 years' qualifying service, at any age
From 6 April 1988At least 2 years' qualifying service
From 1 October 2015, money purchase onlyAt least 30 days' qualifying service, where that service began on or after 1 October 2015

If you left after 6 April 1988 with 2 years or more of service, you very likely have a preserved pension, if you were in the scheme.

Sources: the age 26 and 5 year rule, Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16, paragraph 6(1), read 20 October 2026, in force from 6 April 1975 (Social Security Act 1973 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1973, read 20 October 2026). The age condition ended on 1 January 1986 (Social Security Act 1985, section 1, read 20 October 2026, and Social Security Act 1985 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1985, read 20 October 2026). Five years became two with effect from 6 April 1988 (Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16 as amended, note on the Social Security Act 1986, section 10, read 20 October 2026). Two years today, and 30 days for money purchase service that began on or after 1 October 2015 (Pension Schemes Act 1993, section 71, read 20 October 2026).

The free official route comes first

The UK government's free Pension Tracing Service gives you contact details for a workplace pension scheme from the name of an employer. It has a limit, in its own words: "This service will not tell you whether you have a pension, or what its value is." (Source: GOV.UK, Find pension contact details, read 20 October 2026.)

With an old City bank, the name is the hard part. The name on your payslip is rarely the name on the record today, and a search for the wrong name finds the wrong scheme or nothing you recognise.

Frequently asked questions

I worked for NatWest in a branch. Is this my page? Yes, if your employer was National Westminster Bank. Tell us your years when you order, and the report follows the records that apply to them.

I worked in County Bank or NatWest Investment Bank. Is that a different trail? It can be. County Bank is described as a subsidiary, and we have not read a source for what became of NatWest Investment Bank. Tell us your team and your years.

Is NatWest the same as RBS? In 2000 the Royal Bank of Scotland Group acquired National Westminster Bank, and in 2020 the group's name was changed to NatWest Group. Whether the pension you built up sits with one or the other depends on your years and your terms, and your report says.

Do you contact the pension scheme for me? No. We identify who holds the pension and give you what to send. You contact them yourself, and the pension stays yours throughout.

Is the government tracing service not enough? It is the right first step, and it costs nothing. It gives a contact for a scheme name you already have. It will not tell you whether you have a pension, and with NatWest the name you remember is not the name on the record today.

What if you find nothing? We say so in the report. The refund promise sits next to the order button above.

Try the alternative first

AI can tell you what a pension is. It cannot tell you that you have one. It is genuinely good at explaining how a rule works, and if that is all you needed, you have saved yourself a fee.

Then ask it which scheme holds your money and who administers it today, and ask it for the source and the date it checked. Why that is where it ends
