Australia pension deadlines for people who left

We list every obligation we have verified in Australia's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 18 rows for Australia. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.

Pick the year and we open the free checker with Australia already selected.

"If you don't apply for your DASP, your super fund will transfer your super money to the ATO as unclaimed super money" - the ATO page adds "You may be able to claim ATO-held super as DASP."

A former temporary resident who does not claim their Departing Australia Superannuation Payment loses the account at their super fund: the fund transfers the money to the ATO once 6 months have passed since they left Australia and their visa has ceased.

How long
26 weeks from the date of the proof of life notice (13 weeks of suspension after the initial 13-week deadline)
What is lost
"If after the 13 week suspension period (26 weeks total from the date of notice) the person has not returned a certified proof of life certificate, or entered Australia, payment will be cancelled. In this event, the cancellation will take effect from the date of suspension." and "The payment will remain cancelled unless a certified proof of life certificate is provided to Services Australia."

If the proof of life certificate is still not returned 13 weeks after the payment was suspended - 26 weeks in total from the date of the notice - the Australian pension is cancelled outright, and the cancellation is backdated to the date of suspension.

access to super benefits is generally restricted to members who have reached their preservation age, meaning a member who has not yet reached it cannot generally access their super

The ATO's conditions of release page states, under the heading Preservation age, that access to super benefits is generally restricted to members who have reached their preservation age, and its table sets the preservation age at 60 for anyone born after 30 June 1964.

What the source does not say

The page's Preservation age table and defining sentence do not on this passage list the separate conditions of release, such as retirement or terminal illness, that can still allow access to super before preservation age is reached.

"Concetta's DSP is restored; however, as Concetta provided her completed certificate over 39 weeks after the notice was issued by Services Australia, she is only entitled to arrears from the date she returned the completed proof of life certificate to Services Australia."

A pensioner whose Australian payment was stopped for a missed proof of life certificate must get the certificate back to Services Australia within 39 weeks of the original notice to receive full arrears; beyond that, arrears run only from the day the certificate is received.

Your super fund transfers your super money to the ATO as unclaimed super money. The page adds: 'You may be able to claim ATO-held super as DASP.'

A temporary resident who has left Australia and whose visa has ceased and who does not apply for a Departing Australia superannuation payment will have their super transferred by the fund to the ATO as unclaimed super money once 6 months or more have passed since leaving Australia and the visa has ceased. The person can then apply to the ATO for it as a DASP.

What the source does not say

The ATO's 'ATO-held super' page states the same rule under 'Temporary resident claims': 'If you don't claim your super within 6 months of departing Australia and your visa expiring, your super will be transferred to the ATO as unclaimed super money.'

An Australian Age Pension, Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment recipient aged 80 or over who has been outside Australia for at least 2 years must complete and return a proof of life certificate, certified in person by an authorised certifier, within 13 weeks of the notice Services Australia sends every 2 years.

the person is not eligible for portability of their age pension or DSP for that overseas absence

Since 20 September 2000, the Social Security Guide states, a person who is subject to the former resident rules is not eligible for portability of their age pension or DSP for any overseas absences that occur within 2 years of resuming residence in Australia. The guide defines a former resident as a person who was previously an Australian resident as defined in the Social Security Act but ceased to satisfy that definition, and states the 2 year period starts on the day the person became an Australian resident again.

What the source does not say

The page does not state what evidence Services Australia requires to establish the exact day residence resumed, nor does it state whether the 2 year clock resets if the person leaves and returns again during the 2 year period.

the person's super fund transfers their super money to the ATO as unclaimed super money

Under the heading Locating your super, the ATO's DASP page states that if a person does not apply for their Departing Australia Superannuation Payment, their super fund will transfer the money to the ATO as unclaimed super money once both of two conditions are met: six months or more have passed since the person left Australia, and their visa has ceased to be in effect.

What the source does not say

The page does not state which of the two dates, departure or visa cessation, the six months is counted from when they fall on different days, nor does it name a specific calendar deadline the way it does for fund reporting statement days.

the recipient's rate of pension may become proportional, based on their Australian Working Life Residence (AWLR), instead of continuing at the non-proportional rate

The Social Security Guide states that payments with unlimited portability, such as age pension, and DSP where the person is terminally ill and leaving Australia to reside overseas, or is severely impaired with no future work capacity, are paid at a non-proportional rate for the first 26 weeks outside Australia. After that 26 week point, the guide elsewhere states the recipient's pension rate may become proportional based on their Australian Working Life Residence, abbreviated AWLR, which the guide defines as the number of months the recipient has been an Australian resident between age 16 and age pension age.

What the source does not say

This passage does not itself restate the AWLR proportionalisation formula (annual domestic rate multiplied by AWLR months, capped at 420, divided by 420); that formula appears elsewhere in the same guide and was not returned as a single verbatim sentence, so it is described here rather than quoted.

the Pension Supplement rate reduces to the basic amount

Services Australia's own page states that if a Pension Supplement recipient travels for more than 6 weeks, their Pension Supplement rate will reduce to the basic amount, either after 6 weeks if the travel is short term, or from the date of departure if the person is leaving to live in another country.

What the source does not say

The page does not state on this passage what event restores the full Pension Supplement rate once the person returns to Australia, nor does it define what counts as short term travel versus leaving to live in another country beyond the traveller's own stated intention.

If a pension has been suspended, it can be restored on return to Australia as long as the person returns to Australia within 13 weeks of suspension. If the person remains overseas for 13 weeks, their pension will be cancelled and they will need to re-claim on their return to Australia."

Someone who moves back to Australia, is granted the Age Pension or DSP, and then goes overseas again within 2 years of resuming residence has their pension suspended on departure - and cancelled if they stay away 13 weeks.

Lost or unclaimed super is checked by logging in to ATO online services through myGov, selecting Super, then Fund details; super transferred to the ATO appears as 'ATO-held super'. Linking the ATO to myGov requires confirming identity with information the ATO already holds. A phone self-service line (13 28 65) is the alternative route.

What the source does not say

This is not a deadline but a standing facility. None of the three ATO pages checked says that Australian identity is required. The second and third sentences come from two other ATO pages. The page on linking myGov to the ATO (last updated on 29 June 2026) says 'To link the ATO to your myGov account, we'll ask you to provide some information to confirm your identity' and lists information the ATO already holds, such as bank account details, super account details, a notice of assessment and a travel document, with no mention of a passport, Medicare, citizenship or being overseas. The ATO page on searching for lost super (last updated on 19 June 2026) says 'Individuals and tax agents can complete a super check by phoning our automated self-service line on 13 28 65.' The main source page was last updated on 21 April 2026 and does not give that number.

the source does not state what happens if this is missed

The ATO's own ATO-held super page states, in the same paragraph that describes the six month fund-to-ATO transfer, that a person can claim their super at any time. This corrects the common misreading of the six month figure as a personal claim deadline: six months is when the FUND must hand the money to the ATO, not a cutoff for the individual to claim it back. The ATO's DASP page separately confirms a person may be able to claim ATO-held super as DASP.

What the source does not say

The page does not state whether DASP eligibility conditions, such as current visa or residency status, still need to be met when claiming ATO-held super at a later date, nor does it state whether the amount is adjusted for interest or fees while held by the ATO.

What is lost
Not a deadline to act on; the page states the rate change: 'less than 35 years, you'll get a lower rate in most cases.'

When an Age Pension recipient has been outside Australia for 26 weeks, the rate becomes dependent on how long they were an Australian resident between age 16 and Age Pension age: 35 years or more, the rate does not change in most cases; less than 35 years, a lower rate in most cases (example on page: 10 years of residence gives 10/35ths of the usual rate).

What the source does not say

The page does not use the term 'Australian Working Life Residence'; it says 'how long you were an Australian resident between 16 and Age Pension age'. The page shows 'Page last updated: 3 March 2022'.
