France pension deadlines for people who left

We list every obligation we have verified in France's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 17 rows for France. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.

Pick the year and we open the free checker with France already selected.

What starts the clock
The last day of the last activity abroad
How long
Within 10 years of the last day of the last activity abroad
What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

To buy back periods of salaried activity abroad (or in most French overseas collectivities, or Mayotte), the applicant must have been covered by a compulsory French health insurance scheme for at least 5 years and must request the buyback within 10 years of the last day of the last activity abroad.

What the source does not say

The page sets the 10 year window and the 5 year prior health insurance coverage condition but does not say what happens to a request made after the 10 years have passed (refused, inadmissible, or otherwise); this consequence could not be sourced from the page and is therefore not stated.

What starts the clock
The date L'Assurance Retraite receives the pension application
How long
The pension starts at the earliest on the first day of the month following the date the application is received; it is recommended to apply 5 months before the desired departure date
What is lost
Et il ne peut pas se situer avant la date a laquelle vous avez fait votre demande de retraite

The pension is not paid automatically and must be requested, ideally 5 months before the desired departure date. The pension's start date is fixed at the earliest as the first day of the month following the date the application is received, and it cannot be set before the date on which the application was made.

What the source does not say

This page covers the base pension (régime général, CNAV/L'Assurance Retraite). Agirc-Arrco states on its own site that 'La retraite n'est pas attribuee automatiquement : il faut la demander', so the complementary pension is not automatic either. That Agirc-Arrco page does not state that the pension starts on the first day of the following month, so this entry cites lassuranceretraite.fr alone.

What starts the clock
The source does not state what starts the clock
How long
After 30 years of inactivity
What is lost
The sums definitively revert to the State and to the Overseas Collectivities.

Sums held in accounts and contracts transferred to the Caisse des Dépôts under the Loi Eckert are definitively acquired by the State after 30 years of inactivity if not claimed by the holder or their beneficiaries.

FranceArrears destroyed
What starts the clock
The point the account or contract becomes inactive (start of the 10 year period held by the financial institution); the 20 year Caisse des Depots period starts once the sums are transferred to it
How long
10 years with the bank, then 20 years with the Caisse des Depots, 30 years in total from inactivity to final forfeiture
What is lost
l'argent est definitivement reverse a l'Etat

An inactive account is held by the financial institution for 10 years, then held by the Caisse des Depots for a further 20 years while it manages restitution requests. After 30 years in total with no request from the holder, beneficiaries or heirs, the money passes permanently to the State. Ciclade is the free official search service for these transferred sums.

What the source does not say

The 10-year bank period appears on this page only as a diagram caption (Etablissements financiers pendant 10 ans); the 20-year and 30-year periods are full sentences. This entry relies on the Caisse des Depots' own restatement of the loi Eckert, not on the text of the law on legifrance.gouv.fr.

FrancePayment suspended
What starts the clock
Receipt of the e-mail notification that the 'Transmettre mon certificat de vie' online service is active
How long
Within 2 months of that notification
What is lost
Si votre certificat de vie n'est pas transmis sous un delai de 2 mois, le paiement de votre retraite sera suspendu

Once the online 'Transmettre mon certificat de vie' service is active, the pensioner is notified by e-mail, can retrieve the certificate from their personal account, have it completed by the competent local authority in their country of residence, and must return it within 2 months. The same certificate can be sent once to all of the pensioner's pension funds. A free mobile app, 'Mon certificat de vie', lets the pensioner validate the certificate from home in a few minutes with their phone instead.

What the source does not say

info-retraite.fr states separately, in its own words, that there is a biometric option using 'reconnaissance faciale statique et dynamique' on a smartphone and that the certificate is then sent automatically to all the pensioner's pension schemes. That page is not quoted here, as this entry cites a single page.
