Latvia pension deadlines for people who left
We list every obligation we have verified in Latvia's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 6 rows for Latvia. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.
Pick the year and we open the free checker with Latvia already selected.

- How long
- Backdating capped at six months.
- What is lost
- Arrears beyond the six-month window are permanently forfeited.
CLOCK: backdating of a Latvian pension is capped at six months. Delay permanently forfeits the arrears beyond that window.
- What starts the clock
- The day the application (iesniegums) is submitted to VSAA.
- How long
- Right to pension no earlier than 6 months before the application date.
- What is lost
- The page states that if the application is submitted late, the right to the pension is no earlier than 6 months before the application date (it does not use the words 'arrears lost').
The old-age pension may be applied for no earlier than 1 month before reaching pension age; if the application is submitted later, the right to the pension arises no earlier than 6 months before the day the application is submitted.
What the source does not say
The page gives the period as 6 months. It does not use the words 'arrears lost'; that is our reading of the 6-month rule.

Recipients of a Latvian pension living abroad must, between 1 October and 15 December, submit to VSAA an application for continuation of pension payment in the following year (2026), with a notarial confirmation that the person is alive unless submitted with a Latvian secure e-signature.
What the source does not say
The page does not say that payment is suspended. It is a dated VSAA news item (24 September 2025), not a permanent service page; VSAA republishes it each autumn. VSAA's service page on the old-age pension has no sentence on confirming that the person is alive.
- What starts the clock
- Not applicable (no deadline; eligibility rule). For third-country residents the page states pensions were granted from the date of application but not earlier than 17 June 2023.

The right to the Latvian old-age pension is held by persons living in Latvia, in an EU member state or in a country with which Latvia has a social security agreement; since 17 June 2023 persons living in third countries also have the right.
What the source does not say
The page adds third-country residents from 17 June 2023 (「No 2023.gada 17.jūnija tiesības uz vecuma pensiju ir arī trešajās valstīs dzīvojošajiem.」). On payment, the same page says the pension is paid to a Latvian bank or PNS account or through the competent institution of the agreement country.
