Deadline register

Mexico pension deadlines for people who left

We list every obligation we have verified in Mexico's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 7 rows for Mexico. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.

Pick the year and we open the free checker with Mexico already selected.

MexicoLost outrightClosed 8 September 2020
What starts the clock
The fecha de la baja, meaning the date the person stopped being insured under the mandatory regime
How long
Within the last 5 years counted from the date of the baja, per the document's own example a baja on 8 September 2020 gives a filing deadline of 8 September 2025
What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

A formerly insured person who is en baja (no longer working under IMSS coverage) can request Continuación Voluntaria en el Régimen Obligatorio, known as Modalidad 40, only if they have at least 52 weeks contributed under the mandatory regime within the 5 years counted from the date of the baja. IMSS gives the example that a baja on 8 September 2020 sets a filing deadline of 8 September 2025.

What this means if you no longer live in Mexico

Modalidad 40 can be requested only by someone with at least 52 contributed weeks under the mandatory regime within the 5 years counted from the baja.

What the source does not say

The procedure document gives the eligibility window and a worked example of the deadline but does not state what happens if a person applies after the 5 year window has closed, nor does it quote the statutory text of LSS articles 218 and 219 that it cites as legal basis.

What starts the clock
The person's baja laboral, meaning the date insured employment ends
How long
For a period equal to la cuarta parte del tiempo total cotizado (one quarter of the person's total contributed time)
What is lost
En NINGUN caso se puede otorgar una pension si el asegurado ha salido de la conservacion de derechos aunque reuna las semanas cotizadas y la edad o el dictamen medico, meaning no pension can be granted once the person is outside the conservación de derechos period, regardless of otherwise meeting the contributed weeks and age or medical opinion requirements

Conservación de derechos is the time IMSS grants to insured persons after they stop working to claim a cesantía, vejez or invalidez pension. That period equals one quarter of the person's total contributed time. If the person is outside the conservación de derechos period, IMSS states a pension cannot be granted under any circumstance, even if the person otherwise meets the contributed weeks and age or medical opinion requirements.

What the source does not say

This IMSS training document states the quarter of contributed time formula and the all or nothing consequence but does not cite the LSS article number, does not state the 12 month statutory minimum that other secondary sources mention, and does not state any maximum length for the period.

MexicoPayment suspended
What starts the clock
The source does not state a specific trigger date; the page states only that la institucion que acredita la condicion de pensionado al interesado establece la periodicidad (the certifying institution sets the periodicity).
How long
On the periodicity (periodicidad) set by the pension-paying institution; the consulate page does not itself state a fixed number of months or years that applies to all pensioners
What is lost
El incumplimiento de este requisito puede implicar la suspension del pago de la pension, meaning failure to comply with the survival check requirement can result in suspension of the pension payment

The institution that certifies a person's pensioner status sets the periodicity for that person to pass the revista de supervivencia (survival check) at the consulate. This must be done in person at the consular offices. Failing to comply with this requirement can result in suspension of the pension payment.

What the source does not say

The consulate page confirms a periodic in-person survival check is required and that missing it can suspend payment, but it does not state the actual interval (for example annual) and defers that to whichever institution pays the pension, so the exact clock length is not provable from this page alone.

MexicoApplication window
What starts the clock
The point at which the resources or the monthly payment become exigibles (claimable), counted by calendar year for monthly pension amounts
How long
10 years (diez años) after the resources or amount became exigible
What is lost
El Instituto podra disponer de dichos recursos sin necesidad de resolucion judicial, siempre que constituya una reserva suficiente para atender las solicitudes de devolucion de los trabajadores, pensionados o beneficiarios, meaning IMSS may take possession of the unclaimed funds without a court order, though it must keep a reserve to still honor refund requests

The right of a worker or pensioner, and where applicable their beneficiaries, to receive the resources of the Subcuenta de Retiro, Cesantía en Edad Avanzada y Vejez does not itself expire. Even so, IMSS may take possession of those resources once ten years have passed since they became exigible, without needing a judicial resolution, provided IMSS keeps a sufficient reserve to attend to refund requests from workers, pensioners or beneficiaries. Any monthly pension payment, family allowance or ayuda asistencial receives the same treatment, counted from the calendar year in which it becomes exigible.

What the source does not say

The article states the underlying right is imprescriptible and describes IMSS's power to dispose of the resources after 10 years while keeping a reserve for refunds, but does not state whether a worker or beneficiary can still obtain the specific funds after IMSS has disposed of them, or only receive an equivalent amount from the reserve.

MexicoProof of life
What starts the clock
Living abroad while drawing an IMSS pension; the page states the obligation continues ("deberás seguir realizando") without giving a start point.
How long
The source does not state a frequency or a date. The page states only that a pensioner living abroad must continue to carry out the comprobación de supervivencia electronically at the consular office.
What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

IMSS has dropped the in-person survival check at its counters, but pensioners who live outside Mexico must still carry out the comprobación de supervivencia electronically at the nearest Mexican consulate or embassy.

What the source does not say

This is the gap that matters most in Mexico: the IMSS page states the obligation for pensioners abroad but gives no periodicity (annual, six-monthly, birthday month), no window, no consequence for missing it, and no description of the electronic consular procedure. We could not locate an official SRE or consular page setting the frequency. Treat the obligation as confirmed and the timing as unknown.

What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

What the source does not say

The form states the requirement but not what happens to an applicant who signs with fewer weeks - it does not mention a refusal, a partial withdrawal of the account balance, or any right of review. It also shows no year earlier than 2025 and carries no printed version code or date, so we cannot date the edition we read.
