Deadline register

Netherlands pension deadlines for people who left

We list every obligation we have verified in Netherlands's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 10 rows for Netherlands. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.

Pick the year and we open the free checker with Netherlands already selected.

The page does not state a separate trigger date; the deadline is expressed as a fixed distance before the person's own AOW-leeftijd (AOW pension age)

NederlandWereldwijd states that a person living outside the Netherlands must remember on their own to apply for AOW on time, and that this must be done six months before the person's AOW pension age.

What the source does not say

This page states the 6 month deadline for people living abroad to apply themselves, but does not state that SVB writes automatically to residents about 4 months before AOW pension age. That appears only on a different official page, on rijksoverheid.nl, which states 'U krijgt automatisch ongeveer 4 maanden voor uw AOW-leeftijd een bericht van de SVB' but does not address people living abroad in the same terms. No official page we could read stated a one year cap on backdating a late AOW application: we could not read SVB's pages on applying for AOW inside and outside the Netherlands, and the equivalent rijksoverheid.nl page does not mention backdating. Both points are left unproven rather than combined into this entry.

A person who moves or works outside the Netherlands normally stops building up AOW old age pension. NederlandWereldwijd, the Dutch government's own portal for citizens abroad, states that this can be prevented by taking out voluntary insurance with the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB), but only if the person meets a set of conditions: the application must be made before departure or within one year after leaving the Netherlands, the person must already have been insured in the Netherlands for AOW for one year or more, and the person must not yet have reached AOW pension age. The page also states that a person can be voluntarily insured for a maximum of ten years, with some exceptions.

What the source does not say

The page states the one year application window, the condition of one year of prior insurance and the ten year maximum duration as conditions, but it does not say in so many words what happens if someone applies after the one year window closes. It also does not state a build-up rate of 2 percent a year for the voluntary insurance. SVB's general page on AOW build-up states 'Elk jaar dat u verzekerd bent voor de AOW bouwt u 2% AOW op' for AOW insurance generally and mentions the voluntary insurance route, but does not state the one year deadline, so the two facts do not come from a single page. We could not read SVB's own page on the conditions for voluntary insurance.

The law states the pension cannot commence earlier than the first day of the twelfth month before the application (or before an ex officio award); the Sociale verzekeringsbank may deviate from this in special cases.

Dutch AOW state pension arrears are capped: the pension cannot start earlier than the first day of the twelfth month before the day you applied, so waiting to claim permanently loses the older entitlement unless the SVB treats your case as special.

SVB tells people living outside the Netherlands to apply for their AOW pension 6 months before reaching AOW pension age. In an EU/EEA or treaty country the application can go to the pension institution of the country of residence (which forwards it) or of the last country of insurance; outside those countries the person must contact SVB directly 6 months ahead. The page does not say that no letter is sent abroad, and it does not state a backdating limit; the one-year backdating rule is on a separate SVB news page, set out under 'What the source does not say'.

What the source does not say

The sentence about a letter 4 months before is on SVB's page for residents of the Netherlands ('you will receive a letter from us about how to claim your AOW pension about 4 months before you reach your AOW pension age'), not on the page for people abroad, and no SVB sentence says a letter may not come abroad. The one-year backdating cap is stated on an SVB news page: 'Op dit moment is de wettelijk termijn voor de terugwerkende kracht maximaal één jaar teruggerekend vanaf de aanvraagdatum.' (our translation: 'At present the statutory period for retroactive effect is at most one year counted back from the application date.') The same page says SVB now more often applies retroactive effect of more than one year, naming people living abroad as one group: 'Dankzij deze versoepelingen kan de SVB vaker een terugwerkende kracht van meer dan één jaar toepassen.' So SVB no longer states as absolute that arrears beyond one year are lost. The source is the English page on svb.nl, as we could not read the Dutch page.

SVB: you can take out voluntary AOW insurance if, during the 50-year build-up period, you start living or working outside the Netherlands, you apply for voluntary insurance within 1 year of the date on which you start living or working outside the Netherlands, and you had not yet reached your AOW pension age. The page also lists the same 1-year application window for voluntary Anw insurance. The page does not say what happens if you apply after 1 year.

What the source does not say

The page's wording is a bulleted list of conditions, recorded word for word. The page does not say that a person cannot join later. It shows a version date of 1 February 2024. The source is the English page on svb.nl, as we could not read the Dutch page.

Rijksoverheid.nl states that pensioenfondsen, verzekeraars en premiepensioeninstellingen, werkgevers en vakbonden must agree before 1 January 2028 how they will adjust pensions under the new pension law, and separately, under its own heading, states that by 1 January 2028 at the latest the old pensions must have been converted into new pensions. The page calls the date on which a pension fund or insurer has converted the pensions into new pensions the invaardatum.

What the source does not say

The page states the 1 January 2028 conversion deadline for funds, insurers, employers and unions in its own words, but does not use the terms gewezen deelnemer or slaper (deferred or dormant member) anywhere; the closest wording is that the transition plan covers converting 'de opgebouwde pensioenen van alle werknemers en gepensioneerden' (the accrued pensions of all employees and pensioners), which does not by itself confirm that deferred members outside current employment are explicitly included. The page also does not state any individual address notification duty tied to this conversion, and it does not state a consequence if a fund or employer misses the 1 January 2028 date; it only states that an independent commission mediates if employers, unions or works councils cannot agree on the new pensions, which is a process for reaching agreement rather than a stated penalty for missing the final date.

Rijksoverheid: a small pension (klein pensioen) is a pension entitlement between EUR 2 and EUR 632.63 gross per year (2026 figure). A pension provider may transfer it automatically to the participant's new provider without consent, pay it out monthly from the pension date, or commute it and pay it out in one lump sum on the pension date. The lump-sum route is allowed only if the amount is below EUR 632.63 per year (2026) and the participant has agreed (participants who retired before 2007 could only stop it by objecting). Commutation before the pension date is possible only in three listed cases, each requiring the participant's agreement for post-2007 pensions. Very small pensions of at most EUR 2 gross per year need not be paid out at all and lapse.

What the source does not say

The page requires the participant's consent for commutation ('en de deelnemer hiermee heeft ingestemd'); only automatic transfer of value to the new provider is done without consent. The page states no consequence tied to a missed deadline. Its only sentence on loss concerns the very small pensions described above, which need not be paid out and lapse.
