Deadline register

Switzerland pension deadlines for people who left

We list every obligation we have verified in Switzerland's pension system that runs on a time limit for someone who no longer lives there. Each row says what starts the clock, how long it runs and what is lost, with the official source and the date we checked it. We hold 19 rows for Switzerland. Where an official source is silent, we say so on the row rather than guess.

Pick the year and we open the free checker with Switzerland already selected.

What starts the clock
Ablauf des Kalenderjahres, fuer welches die Beitraege geschuldet sind, that is the end of the calendar year for which the contributions are owed
How long
Within five years after the end of that calendar year (with a one year extension from finalization of the tax assessment for certain self employed and non employed contributions under Art. 6, 8 and 10)
What is lost
Sie koennen nicht mehr eingefordert oder entrichtet werden, that is the contributions can no longer either be demanded by the compensation fund or paid by the person or employer who owes them; the right is extinguished on both sides.

AHVG Art. 16 Abs. 1 sets a five year rolling forfeiture rule for AHV contributions owed. If contributions are not asserted by a formal Verfuegung (decision) within five years of the end of the calendar year for which they are owed, they can no longer be either collected by the compensation fund or paid by the insured or employer. The same paragraph extends this by one further year for certain self employed and non employed persons' contributions where the deadline runs instead from the calendar year in which the relevant tax assessment became final.

What the source does not say

The page we read does not say whether or how this five-year rule interacts with the separate gap-filling mechanism under Art. 29bis Abs. 4 AHVG, which closes contribution gaps through later contributions. This entry rests only on what Art. 16 Abs. 1 itself states, not on any assumption that gap filling has its own five-year rule.

What starts the clock
The applicant permanently settling abroad (sich endgueltig im Ausland niedergelassen), i.e. leaving Switzerland with the qualifying family members
How long
As soon as the applicant has left Switzerland, the relevant claim form must be completed; the page does not state any further numeric time limit for filing the claim after departure
What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

The Zentrale Ausgleichsstelle (ZAS), the federal body that administers this refund, states on its own page that a refund of paid AHV contributions is available to persons holding the nationality of a country with which Switzerland has no social security agreement (naming Australia, Brazil, China, India, the Philippines, South Korea, Tunisia and Uruguay among those covered under conditions), provided at least one year of contributions was paid and the applicant, spouse and children under 25 have left Switzerland. The page instructs that once the applicant has left Switzerland, the relevant form must be completed, but does not give a numeric time limit for doing so.

What the source does not say

The page gives no deadline, whether in days, months or years, for how long after leaving Switzerland the refund may still be claimed, and states no consequence for a late claim; both points are recorded here as genuinely absent from the page rather than inferred.

SwitzerlandLost outright1176 days left, closes 31 December 2029
What starts the clock
The date the insured person reaches the AHV reference age
How long
Within five years of reaching reference age, but at the latest in the year 2029 (the worked example in the same document gives 31 December 2029 as the date the vested benefit must be drawn)
What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

As part of the AHV 21 reform, which entered into force on 1 January 2024, a transitional provision to Art. 16 FZV applies for the years 2024 to 2034. Under this provision, insured persons who are no longer working after reaching the reference age must withdraw their vested benefits credit within five years of reaching reference age, but at the latest in 2029. The federal EDI's own published guidance on the reform sets this out in an example under this transitional rule, with the concrete date given as 31 December 2029.

What the source does not say

The document is the EDI's own question-and-answer guidance (referring to Rz 1124), not the statutory text of Art. 16 FZV itself, and the statutory paragraph on Fedlex is not quoted here. The document does not state what happens to a person's vested benefits, or to the pension institution's obligations, if the withdrawal is not made by the deadline.

How long
At the latest two years after leaving the pension fund
What is lost
The pension fund is obliged to transfer the amount to the Auffangeinrichtung (Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution) - the money leaves the original fund.

If you left Switzerland without telling your occupational pension fund (2nd pillar) where to send your vested benefits, and did not take a cash payment, the fund must transfer the money away to the Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution (Auffangeinrichtung) at the latest two years after you left.

What this means if you no longer live in Switzerland

The money is not destroyed: the source states the fund must transfer it to the Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution (Auffangeinrichtung).

What starts the clock
The page does not state a separate start date beyond the terms of the rule itself. Because the rule is expressed as the insured's 100th year of age, the effective anchor is the insured's date of birth.
How long
When the insured person sein 100. Altersjahr vollendet hat oder vollendet haette, that is upon completion of the insured's 100th year of age, or the age they would have completed had they lived that long
What is lost
The claim verjaehrt, that is it prescribes and is legally extinguished; the statute does not separately spell out what becomes of the corresponding assets beyond stating that the claim itself lapses.

BVG Art. 41 sets prescription periods for occupational pension claims. Abs. 5 gives a ten year prescription for claims to benefits generally, running from the event giving rise to the claim (age, death or invalidity). Abs. 6 then provides a backstop: any claims that were not asserted under Abs. 5 prescribe once the insured person has completed, or would have completed, their 100th year of age. In practice this is the outer limit at which a vorsorgeeinrichtung, the Sicherheitsfonds BVG or the Zentralstelle 2. Säule can treat forgotten vested benefits as time barred.

Dispatch of the annual life-certificate form by the SAK / IV-Stelle für Versicherte im Ausland

What is lost
the source does not state what happens if this is missed

The Schweizerische Ausgleichskasse and the IV-Stelle für Versicherte im Ausland carry out annual life checks. They send the insured person a form that must be completed, signed by the municipality or a competent authority, and returned together with a copy of the identity card within 90 days so that the pension can continue to be paid without interruption. Death data is received automatically for Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Croatia; anyone who receives no form need do nothing.

What the source does not say

The page does not say 'payment suspended'; it says the form must be returned within 90 days 'damit Ihre Rente ohne Unterbrechung weitergezahlt werden kann' (so that your pension can continue to be paid without interruption). As the page does not state that payment is suspended, we do not state what happens if the form is late. The page is dated 'Veröffentlicht am 7. Februar 2025'; the form is dated 16 Oktober 2025.

Reference age (65; transitional 64+3/6/9 months for women born 1961-1963): early drawing counts from age 63 (62 for women born 1961-1969); deferral counts from the reference age
How long
Early drawing: from age 63 at the earliest (62 for women born 1961-1969); deferral: one to at most five years after the reference age
What is lost
Early drawing: a reduced old-age pension for the entire duration of the pension. Deferral: an increased old-age pension for the entire duration of the pension.

Under the flexible retirement rules, the AHV old-age pension can be drawn early from age 63 at the earliest (age 62 for women born 1961-1969), with monthly early drawing possible, or deferred by one to at most five years. Early drawing gives a reduced pension for the entire duration of the pension; deferral gives an increased pension for the entire duration.

What the source does not say

The Merkblatt frames early drawing as 'frühestens ab dem 63. Altersjahr', that is up to two years before reference age 65, or up to three years for women born 1961-1969 with the age-62 option. The source is Merkblatt 3.04 'Flexibler Rentenbezug', Stand am 1. Januar 2026, published by the Informationsstelle AHV/IV.

Freizügigkeitsfall (the exit event from the pension fund)
How long
Earliest six months, latest two years after the exit event
What is lost
If the insured person gives no notice, the pension fund must transfer the exit benefit plus interest to the Auffangeinrichtung (Art. 60 BVG).

Under Art. 4 FZG, an insured person who leaves a pension fund without joining a new one must tell the fund in which permitted form the cover is to be preserved; if no such notice is given, the fund must transfer the exit benefit plus interest to the Auffangeinrichtung no earlier than six months and no later than two years after the exit event. This is what the statute says; it does not evidence what any individual fund currently does.

What the source does not say

The rule is in Art. 4 Abs. 2 FZG (SR 831.42), not in the BVG. The Fedlex page states 'Stand am 1. Januar 2024'. Footnote markers (11, 12) are removed from the quote. The source is the statute only: it supports what the law says, not what any fund does in practice.

A person looking for occupational pension (2nd pillar) assets can make a written request to the Zentralstelle 2. Säule at the Sicherheitsfonds BVG, which compares the person's data with the reports from pension and vested-benefits institutions and informs them of the result. No telephone information is given. The Zentralstelle holds no assets and does not decide entitlements; requests for payment must be made directly to the institution holding the money.
