How to find a lost German pension from abroad

Germany separates the state pension (Deutsche Rentenversicherung, or DRV) from occupational pensions (betriebliche Altersvorsorge, bAV). DRV holds a central contribution record; bAV is arranged by each employer through one of several vehicles (Direktversicherung, Pensionskasse, Pensionsfonds, Unterstützungskasse, Direktzusage) and there is no consumer register that consolidates them. The new Digitale Rentenübersicht aggregates pillars but relies on providers opting in. This guide walks each route honestly.

The official route

Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) + Digitale Rentenübersicht. www.deutsche-rentenversicherung.de

DRV holds the central record of state-pension contributions under your Versicherungsnummer (insurance number). From abroad, requests are handled by DRV's international departments; the Kontenklärung (account clarification) process reconciles missing years before you can draw. Digitale Rentenübersicht combines DRV, occupational, and private pillars into one view, but coverage depends on providers joining; gaps for older entitlements are common.

Occupational bAV pensions live with the vehicle the employer chose; there is no central bAV register.

What this route can and cannot do

Route verdict: HUMAN-ONLY

For bAV, this is a research task, not a portal lookup. Identification is done by walking each former German employer through its bAV arrangement and its current provider. PensionHunter does this as prepare-and-guide, with a complete request pack at the Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier, written and ready for the customer to send under a signed Information Request Authority.

Steps you can take yourself

  1. For the state pension: request a Renteninformation or full Versicherungsverlauf from DRV under your Versicherungsnummer.
  2. Register for Digitale Rentenübersicht and check what surfaces there; note the gaps rather than assume completeness.
  3. For occupational pensions: list every German employer with dates. Contact former employers still trading and ask personnel for the bAV vehicle (Direktversicherung, Pensionskasse, Pensionsfonds, Unterstützungskasse, or Direktzusage) and the current provider.
  4. For employers acquired or wound up, work the successor through Handelsregister filings before approaching the identified provider.
  5. For Direktversicherung specifically (a life-insurance-style contract), the current insurer holds the record, the trace ends there once you have the policy number.

Where the DIY route stalls

  • No central bAV register, every employer's arrangement is separate, and multi-employer histories multiply the work.
  • Five bAV vehicles, each has different providers, letter formats, and response norms.
  • Digitale Rentenübersicht coverage, providers are still joining; a missing entry is not proof no entitlement exists.
  • Employer successors, German M&A history requires Handelsregister research before the bAV provider can be reached.
  • Bilateral totalisation for split working lives (Germany + another country), slows the DRV side.

Where PensionHunter fits

For German traces, PensionHunter's role is bounded and honest:

  • State pension (DRV): prepare-and-guide the DRV request from abroad; the Kontenklärung is yours to lodge.
  • Occupational (bAV): in the Country Pension Identification Report, we identify the likely bAV vehicle and provider per former employer. In the Enhanced Pension Identification Report, we prepare a complete request pack for each identified provider, written and ready for you to send under your signed Information Request Authority.

The member record, accrued value, options, tax treatment on withdrawal, always stays with DRV or the bAV provider. PensionHunter identifies where it sits.

If your career spanned Germany plus other countries, the multi-country search covers every jurisdiction we operate in for a single fee.

Frequently asked

Does Digitale Rentenübersicht list every German pension I hold?

Not yet. It aggregates providers who have joined the platform. Gaps for older occupational entitlements are common; a blank entry is not proof of nothing.

Can I claim DRV state pension from outside Germany?

Yes. DRV administers state pensions for members abroad through its international departments and bilateral totalisation agreements.

What are the five bAV vehicles?

Direktversicherung, Pensionskasse, Pensionsfonds, Unterstützungskasse, and Direktzusage. Each is administered differently and identifying the right one is the main research step.

What does PensionHunter deliver at the end of a German search?

For bAV, the identified vehicle and provider per former employer and (at Search) the complete request pack for each, assembled as your Action Pack. For DRV, prepare-and-guide support rather than a stand-in.
