Pension question, New Zealand

Did I join KiwiSaver while I was on a work visa?

Whether a former New Zealand worker has one at all turns on a single line: people on a temporary, visitor, work or student visa could never join, so years worked on a work visa produced nothing. Those who held residence and were auto enrolled from 1 July 2007 onwards do have a balance.

What to do next

  1. List each New Zealand job, the years, and the visa you held at the time.
  2. Keep any payslip, because KiwiSaver deductions show on it.
  3. Run our free check to see which funds and countries are worth looking at.

Questions people also ask

Could I have opted out after being enrolled?

A person automatically enrolled in KiwiSaver on starting a New Zealand job can opt out only between day 14 and day 56 after starting; after that window they remain a member with contributions deducted.

Do you give advice on what to do?

No. We identify where a pension is likely held and the official route to it, and we name each source with the date we read it. We do not give financial, tax or legal advice.
