- The Belgian Pensions Ombudsman can refuse to handle a complaint about events that happened more than a year ago. What is lost: The Ombudsman service can decide not to deal with the complaint. Official source, ombudsmanpensioenen.be (checked 1 September 2026)
- A Belgian pension application can only be filed inside a fixed window: no earlier than 12 months before, and no later than the month before, the date the pension is to start. What is lost: the source does not state what happens if this is missed Official source, sfpd.fgov.be (checked 1 September 2026)
- A surviving spouse who must apply has to file the survivor's pension or transitional allowance application within 12 months of the death to have it start at the death; a later application starts only from the month after it is filed, and the transitional allowance can be lost outright. What is lost: The survivor's pension or transitional allowance only takes effect in the month following the application, and the transitional allowance can definitively be lost because of its temporary nature. Official source, sfpd.fgov.be (checked 1 September 2026)
- After receiving the second-pillar leaving certificate, a departing employee has 30 days to tell the employer what to do with the accrued reserves. What is lost: If you do not respond, the employer assumes you are staying with the existing pension institution (option 1). Official source, wikifin.be (checked 1 September 2026)
