How to find a lost Swedish pension from abroad

Sweden runs one of the cleanest consolidated pensions views in the world: minPension.se aggregates public (allmän pension via Pensionsmyndigheten), occupational (tjänstepension, most commonly ITP for white-collar employees, administered by Collectum), and private pensions in a single dashboard under your personnummer. The catch from abroad is authentication: minPension.se requires BankID, which is tied to a Swedish bank account and can lapse once you leave.

The official route

minPension.se (consolidated view). www.minpension.se/faq-in-english

minPension.se is the single member-facing view of every Swedish pension entitlement reported to it, from Pensionsmyndigheten (allmän pension) through ITP and other tjänstepension schemes to private contracts. Authentication is BankID. For ITP specifically (white-collar occupational), Collectum administers member records and can be contacted separately if BankID is not available from abroad.

Pensionsmyndigheten handles allmän pension calculations, including EU / bilateral totalisation, on the claim itself.

What this route can and cannot do

Route verdict: HUMAN-ONLY

With working BankID, minPension.se is the fastest and most complete first look for any Swedish member. Once BankID lapses, the common case for long-departed expats, the trace becomes a written request to Pensionsmyndigheten for allmän pension and with each identified tjänstepension administrator (Collectum for ITP, Fora for SAF-LO, KPA for kommun/region, SPV for state, plus insurers). PensionHunter does this as prepare-and-guide, with a complete request pack at the Enhanced Pension Identification Report tier, written and ready for the customer to send under a signed Information Request Authority.

Steps you can take yourself

  1. Find your personnummer, on any Swedish official document.
  2. If BankID still works from abroad, log into minPension.se for the consolidated view.
  3. If BankID has lapsed: write to Pensionsmyndigheten for the allmän pension record.
  4. For tjänstepension: identify which collective agreement applied to each former Swedish employer (ITP for white-collar; SAF-LO for blue-collar; KAP-KL / AKAP-KR for municipal/region; PA16 for state) and contact the administrator that applies (Collectum, Fora, KPA, SPV, respectively).
  5. For private-pension contracts, contact each insurer directly.

Where the DIY route stalls

  • BankID from abroad, tied to a Swedish bank; often lapses when the member's Swedish tax residency ends.
  • minPension.se coverage, very broad but not universal; older tjänstepension entries and some private contracts may still need a direct written request.
  • Multiple tjänstepension regimes, the collective agreement determines the administrator; identifying the right one per employer is a research step.
  • Small dormant balances, short-service tjänstepension entitlements are commonly overlooked.
  • EU / bilateral totalisation, coordinated by Pensionsmyndigheten on the claim, not before.

Where PensionHunter fits

For Swedish traces, PensionHunter's role is bounded and honest:

  • Public (Pensionsmyndigheten): prepare-and-guide the minPension.se or postal Pensionsmyndigheten request from abroad.
  • Tjänstepension (occupational): in the Country Pension Identification Report, we identify the applicable regime and administrator per former employer. In the Enhanced Pension Identification Report, we prepare a complete request pack for each identified administrator, written and ready for you to send under your signed Information Request Authority. The deliverable is your Action Pack.

The minPension.se view, the Pensionsmyndigheten calculation, and the tjänstepension balances always stay with those bodies. PensionHunter identifies where each sits and prepares the request pack, written and ready to send.

If your career spanned Sweden plus other countries, the multi-country search covers every jurisdiction we operate in for a single fee.

Frequently asked

Can I log into minPension.se from outside Sweden?

Only with BankID. If BankID has lapsed, a postal request to Pensionsmyndigheten and the relevant tjänstepension administrators is the fallback.

What is ITP and how does it relate to allmän pension?

ITP is the collective-agreement occupational pension for most Swedish white-collar employees, administered mainly by Collectum. It sits on top of the state allmän pension.

Does minPension.se show everything?

It aggregates from the pension bodies that report to it, very broad coverage but not universal. Older or small entries sometimes require a direct written request to the administrator.

What does PensionHunter deliver at the end of a Swedish search?

The identified tjänstepension administrator per former employer and (at Search) the complete request pack for each, assembled as your Action Pack. For allmän pension, prepare-and-guide support.
