Polish workers in the UK: your UK pension and your ZUS years together
You worked in the UK, and before or after that in Poland. Here is how your UK years and your ZUS years work together, where to apply, and how to find a UK workplace pension.
The short answer
Each country pays a pension for the years worked there: ZUS for your years in Poland, the UK for your years in the UK. Years from the other country can help you meet a minimum period, and you can apply in the country where you live, for example through ZUS, which passes the application to the UK.
Check any UK workplace pension separately. It is not a state pension and it does not go through ZUS.
If you want to see first what is likely waiting for you in each country, our free pension check takes about a minute.
Three separate things, not one
Most people who came back from the UK think of "the English pension" as one thing. In practice there are three:
- The UK State Pension. You build it through years of National Insurance. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) keeps the record.
- A UK workplace pension. A scheme your employer paid into. It sits with a pension fund or insurer, often under a different name from the employer.
- Your Polish pension from ZUS. For your years of insurance in Poland.
Check each one separately. People often sort out one and forget the other.
Where to check what
| What | Who holds your record | How to check from Poland | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK State Pension | The International Pension Centre (DWP) handles people living outside the UK. | Phone +44 191 218 7777 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm UK time) or the online enquiry form on gov.uk. The online forecast needs an identity check built around UK documents and accounts. | You need 10 qualifying years of National Insurance to get any new State Pension. Contributions in the EEA, Poland included, can help you reach the 10, but the amount counts your UK years only. |
| UK workplace pension | The fund or insurer of your employer's scheme. | The free Pension Tracing Service gives a scheme's contact details from the employer's or provider's name. It works from abroad: +44 191 218 7777 (Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm) or online. | It does not tell you whether you have a pension or what it is worth. The money stays invested after you change jobs and still belongs to you. |
| Poland: ZUS | Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, the Social Insurance Institution. | ZUS's electronic services platform, PUE/eZUS, at zus.pl. ZUS also describes the statement of your insured account under "Twoje konto w ZUS". | Polish pension age for people born after 31 December 1948: 60 for women, 65 for men. |

How UK years and ZUS years count together
On the UK side. The UK government says contributions made in EEA countries and Switzerland can be added to your UK years to meet the 10 year condition. With 10 or more years in total you could get the new State Pension, but the amount paid is based only on the qualifying years on your UK record.
On the Polish side. If you lack the insurance period a benefit needs, periods from other states can be counted when deciding whether you qualify, as long as they do not overlap. For people born after 31 December 1948 the amount of the Polish pension depends only on insurance periods in Poland. ZUS accepts only foreign periods that the foreign institution confirms. If your Polish record is too short, ZUS calculates a partial pension, in the ratio of Polish periods to Polish and foreign periods together.
Who pays. ZUS pays for your Polish years. You apply to the UK for your UK years, and the application can go through ZUS.
What about Brexit?
Two agreements, two periods:
- Years up to 31 December 2020. The EU Withdrawal Agreement keeps social security protection on the rules in force before 1 January 2021 for people within its scope.
- From 1 January 2021. The EU and UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement applies, and it covers coordination of social security systems.
The UK government also says its State Pension rules for people with EEA years apply to everyone, regardless of nationality and regardless of when they moved. If your situation is unusual (for example working in both countries at the same time), ask ZUS and the International Pension Centre in writing.
Step by step
- List your years. Every period in Poland and in the UK, with dates, the employer's name as it was then, the city and where you lived. Note your UK National Insurance number and your PESEL.
- Check your ZUS account. Log in to PUE/eZUS on zus.pl and see which periods ZUS holds.
- Check your UK National Insurance record. From Poland the simplest route is the International Pension Centre. Ask how many qualifying years you have and your UK State Pension age (gov.uk also has a tool to check the age).
- If you have gaps, check the voluntary contribution rules. Since 6 April 2026 you cannot pay voluntary Class 2 contributions for time abroad. You can apply to pay Class 3 for time abroad after 5 April 2026 if you previously lived in the UK for 10 years in a row, or paid 10 years of qualifying contributions in total. Earlier periods may still fall under the previous rules. You must apply first; do not pay until HMRC sends the amount and a payment reference.
- Find each UK workplace pension. Use the Pension Tracing Service for every UK employer. Automatic enrolment reached employers in stages, by size, between October 2012 and February 2018. If you worked in the UK after those dates, a workplace scheme is likely. Before 2012 there is one only if your employer ran it.
- When pension age approaches, apply. Living in Poland, you apply as a rule in the country where you live. ZUS prepares the foreign pension application and forwards it to the UK. You can also contact the International Pension Centre directly, no earlier than 4 months before your UK State Pension age. When everything is decided, ZUS sends you a summary of the decisions from every country.
If you live in the UK and want a Polish pension, the UK government publishes a separate EEA form (CFN 901) that you send to the International Pension Centre.
A UK pension paid in Poland
- The UK State Pension can be paid into a bank in the country where you live, Poland included. It is usually converted into local currency at the rate on the day of conversion.
- Poland is on the UK list of countries where the State Pension usually increases every year.
- A UK workplace pension is paid by its scheme, under the scheme's rules and pension age.
What to gather before you start

Frequently asked questions
Do my years in the UK count toward my Polish ZUS pension?
They can help you meet the length of service condition if you lack Polish years. For people born after 31 December 1948 the amount of the Polish pension depends only on periods in Poland, and the UK pays for the UK years.
Do my UK years still count after Brexit?
Years up to 31 December 2020 are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement for people within its scope, and from 1 January 2021 the coordination in the EU and UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement applies. The UK government says EEA contributions can help meet the State Pension conditions regardless of nationality and when you moved.
How many UK years do I need for a UK State Pension?
The new State Pension needs 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record. Years from Poland can help you reach 10, but the amount counts only your UK years.
Where do I apply for my UK pension if I live in Poland?
As a rule in the country where you live, through ZUS, which forwards the application to the UK. You can also contact the International Pension Centre directly, no earlier than 4 months before your UK State Pension age.
Can my UK State Pension be paid into a Polish account, and will it go up?
Yes, it can be paid into a bank in the country where you live, usually converted into local currency. Poland is on the list of countries where the State Pension usually increases every year.
How do I find a UK workplace pension after moving back to Poland?
Use the free Pension Tracing Service with your employer's name; it gives the scheme's contact details but not whether you have a pension or its value. The money in the scheme still belongs to you after you leave the job.
When the free routes are enough, and when they are not
For many people the free official routes are enough: ZUS, the International Pension Centre and the Pension Tracing Service all work for people living in Poland.
It gets harder when you cannot remember the employer's name, when the company was renamed, merged or bought, or when you worked in several countries and do not know where something was left. That is where we help: we identify which schemes and bodies are likely to hold a pension in your name and give you the route to each. You sign and send any letters yourself. We give no financial advice.

Try the alternative first
AI can tell you what a pension is. It cannot tell you that you have one. It is genuinely good at explaining how a rule works, and if that is all you needed, you have saved yourself a fee.
Then ask it which scheme holds your money and who administers it today, and ask it for the source and the date it checked. Why that is where it ends
