Worked at Prudential in the UK? Your pension probably still exists. The name on your payslip may not.
If you worked for the Prudential in the UK, this page is for you. The name is still in use, but the company that carries the Prudential name today is not the whole of what it was, and the UK business went into a separate listed company in 2019.
What happened
Prudential's own timeline says it was founded on 30 May 1848 in Hatton Garden, London (Source: Prudential plc, our history timeline, read 3 November 2026). Companies House records The Prudential Assurance Company Limited as incorporated on 1 June 1881 (Source: Companies House, The Prudential Assurance Company Limited, read 3 November 2026). Prudential's timeline says that in 1978 Prudential Corporation was formed as the holding company, alongside The Prudential Assurance Company (Source: Prudential plc, our history timeline, read 3 November 2026). Companies House lists the name Prudential Corporation public limited company for the holding company from 1 November 1978 to 1 October 1999 (Source: Companies House, the company's list of previous names, read 3 November 2026). Prudential's timeline lists, for 1999, the acquisition of M&G (Source: Prudential plc, our history timeline, read 3 November 2026). On 21 October 2019 Prudential plc announced that it had completed the demerger of M&G plc (Source: Prudential plc, completion of the demerger of M&G plc, 21 October 2019, read 3 November 2026).
Why the trail is hard
The Prudential was a group of companies with a holding company above them, so the company that employed you can differ from the name on the building. The holding company changed its name in 1999, and the 2019 demerger put part of the group into a separate company. The sources we read say nothing about which company employed UK staff, so we do not guess.
Which era were you in?
The employer's name and owner changed over the years, so the first question is which one you worked for. This holds for the dates in the left column.
| Your years | Who your employer was |
|---|---|
| Before 1 November 1978 | The Prudential, with The Prudential Assurance Company among its companies |
| 1 November 1978 to 30 September 1999 | Prudential Corporation, the holding company formed in 1978, with The Prudential Assurance Company |
| From 1 October 1999 | Prudential plc, the holding company under its new name, which acquired M&G in 1999 |
| From 21 October 2019 | Prudential plc, with M&G plc demerged on that day. Which side employed you depends on your contract |
Which pension arrangement applied to you depends on the company that employed you in those years and on your own terms. This page does not name a scheme or say who holds one today. A name that is right for the bank today may not have been right for your years, so we do not guess. Your report names it.

Do I have a pension from my Prudential years?
It depends first on when you left. The law set a minimum, and a scheme could always be more generous than the law.
| You left | What the law required for a preserved pension |
|---|---|
| Before 6 April 1975 | No legal minimum. The scheme's own rules decided. |
| 6 April 1975 to 31 December 1985 | Aged 26 or over, with at least 5 years' qualifying service |
| 1 January 1986 to 5 April 1988 | At least 5 years' qualifying service, at any age |
| From 6 April 1988 | At least 2 years' qualifying service |
| From 1 October 2015, money purchase only | At least 30 days' qualifying service, where that service began on or after 1 October 2015 |
If you left after 6 April 1988 with 2 years or more of service, you very likely have a preserved pension, if you were in the scheme.
Sources: the age 26 and 5 year rule, Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16, paragraph 6(1), read 20 October 2026, in force from 6 April 1975 (Social Security Act 1973 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1973, read 20 October 2026). The age condition ended on 1 January 1986 (Social Security Act 1985, section 1, read 20 October 2026, and Social Security Act 1985 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1985, read 20 October 2026). Five years became two with effect from 6 April 1988 (Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16 as amended, note on the Social Security Act 1986, section 10, read 20 October 2026). Two years today, and 30 days for money purchase service that began on or after 1 October 2015 (Pension Schemes Act 1993, section 71, read 20 October 2026).
The free official route comes first
The UK government's free Pension Tracing Service gives you contact details for a workplace pension scheme from the name of an employer. It has a limit, in its own words: "This service will not tell you whether you have a pension, or what its value is." (Source: GOV.UK, Find pension contact details, read 20 October 2026.)
With an old City bank, the name is the hard part. The name on your payslip is rarely the name on the record today, and a search for the wrong name finds the wrong scheme or nothing you recognise.

Frequently asked questions
I worked for the Prudential in the UK. Is this my page? Yes, if your employer was the Prudential or a UK company in its group. Tell us the name on your payslip and your years when you order.
Is Prudential the same as Prudential Financial in the United States? No. Prudential plc's own announcement says it is not affiliated in any manner with Prudential Financial, Inc. This page follows the UK company.
Did the 2019 demerger change my employer? It can have. Prudential plc says it completed the demerger of M&G plc on 21 October 2019. We have not read a source that says which company employed UK staff on that day, so your report follows the records that apply to your years. See our Abbey National page for another large UK name that changed hands.
Do you contact the pension scheme for me? No. We identify who holds the pension and give you what to send. You contact them yourself, and the pension stays yours throughout.
Is the government tracing service not enough? It is the right first step, and it costs nothing. It gives a contact for a scheme name you already have. It will not tell you whether you have a pension, and with Prudential the name you remember is not the name on the record today.
What if you find nothing? We say so in the report. The refund promise sits next to the order button above.

Try the alternative first
AI can tell you what a pension is. It cannot tell you that you have one. It is genuinely good at explaining how a rule works, and if that is all you needed, you have saved yourself a fee.
Then ask it which scheme holds your money and who administers it today, and ask it for the source and the date it checked. Why that is where it ends
