Pension question, Chile
Do foreigners keep their AFP account after leaving Chile?
If you worked in Chile, even for two or three years, an AFP individual capitalisation account was opened in your name the first time you entered the system, and the Superintendencia de Pensiones describes the ten per cent taken from your pay as your own pension saving, deducted monthly up to a ceiling of 90 UF. The balance stays invested, it is heritable if you die, and a short spell leaves a smaller balance rather than a closed account.

How long does disability and survivors cover last?
Cover under the disability and survivors insurance lasts only twelve months after your last contribution, and the Superintendencia states that anyone outside it must finance a pension from the accumulated funds alone.

Do you give advice on what to do?
No. We identify where a pension is likely held and the official route to it, and we name each source with the date we read it. We do not give financial, tax or legal advice.
