  • Meu INSS and the CNIS contribution record

The CNIS is the master contribution record and carries statutory evidential force under Article 29-A of Lei 8.213. It is read through Meu INSS, which needs only a gov.br bronze account created online, keyed to the CPF. A CPF can be obtained from abroad through Receita Federal at cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br. Meu INSS carries a dedicated no-password service tab for international-agreement requests. Totalization agreements are in force with the United States (2018), Japan (2012) and Portugal (1995), alongside the Iberoamerican Convention. FGTS and PIS or PASEP are separate pots, including for heirs. Survivor pension arrears are retroactive only where the claim is filed within 90 days, or 180 days for children under 16. Closed funds supervised by PREVIC and PGBL or VGBL products have no per-person central lookup.

Access note on record: Requires a CPF and a gov.br bronze account, both obtainable from abroad; telephone 135 (international reachability not confirmed)

    • An appeal against an INSS decision must be lodged within 30 days of learning the result. What is lost: the source does not state what happens if this is missed Official source, gov.br (checked 1 September 2026)
    • File a recurso ordinario with the Conselho de Recursos da Previdencia Social (CRPS) within 30 days of being notified of the INSS decision What is lost: the source does not state what happens if this is missed Official source, gov.br (checked 1 September 2026)
    • A death pension is paid from the date of death only if it is claimed within 90 days of the death (180 days for children under 16). What is lost: The source states this in item II of the same Art. 74: "II - do requerimento, quando requerida após o prazo previsto no inciso I" - [PensionHunter translation, not the source's own English] "II - of the claim, when claimed after the period provided for in item I." Where the claim is made after the 180/90 days, the pension is due from the date of the claim instead of from the date of death. Official source, planalto.gov.br (checked 1 September 2026)
    • File the requerimento for pensao por morte within 90 days of the segurado's death (180 days if the dependent is a child under 16) so the benefit is backdated to the date of death What is lost: Per inciso II, when pensao por morte is requerida after the deadline set out in inciso I, the benefit is due a contar da data do requerimento (from the date of the request) rather than from the date of death Official source, planalto.gov.br (checked 1 September 2026)
