Worked at TSB in the UK? Your pension probably still exists. The name on your payslip may not.

If you worked for TSB before it became part of Lloyds, this page is for you. The TSB name is in use today, and we have not read a source that ties that business to the TSB Bank plc of the 1998 Act, so this page does not either.

What happened

The Trustee Savings Banks Act 1985, dated 25 July 1985, provided for the reorganisation of the trustee savings banks into companies under the Companies Acts (Source: Trustee Savings Banks Act 1985, legislation.gov.uk, read 27 October 2026). The Lloyds TSB Act 1998, dated 31 July 1998, provided for the undertaking of TSB Bank plc to be transferred to Lloyds Bank Plc (Source: Lloyds TSB Act 1998, legislation.gov.uk, read 27 October 2026). That Act's preamble records TSB as a subsidiary of Lloyds TSB (Source: Lloyds TSB Act 1998, legislation.gov.uk, read 27 October 2026). Lloyds Banking Group records that its sale of its remaining interest in TSB to Banco de Sabadell became unconditional on 30 June 2015 (Source: Lloyds Banking Group annual report on Form 20-F for 2015, SEC, read 27 October 2026).

Why the trail is hard

TSB was a family of local trustee savings banks before it was a company, and the 1985 reorganisation put them into companies. A person who left in the 1980s may have worked for one of those local banks. We have not read the dates of the 1986 flotation or the 1995 merger with Lloyds Bank, so we give none.

Which era were you in?

The employer's name and owner changed over the years, so the first question is which one you worked for. This holds for the dates in the left column.

Your yearsWho your employer was
Before the 1985 reorganisationA trustee savings bank, one of the institutions regulated by the Trustee Savings Banks Act 1981
By 31 July 1998TSB Bank plc, a subsidiary of Lloyds TSB
From the appointed day under the 1998 ActThe undertaking of TSB Bank plc provided to pass to Lloyds Bank Plc. We have not read the appointed day
From 30 June 2015A TSB in which Lloyds Banking Group sold its remaining interest to Banco de Sabadell. We do not link it to the TSB Bank plc of 1998

Which pension arrangement applied to you depends on the company that employed you in those years and on your own terms. This page does not name a scheme or say who holds one today. A name that is right for the bank today may not have been right for your years, so we do not guess. Your report names it.

Do I have a pension from my TSB years?

It depends first on when you left. The law set a minimum, and a scheme could always be more generous than the law.

You leftWhat the law required for a preserved pension
Before 6 April 1975No legal minimum. The scheme's own rules decided.
6 April 1975 to 31 December 1985Aged 26 or over, with at least 5 years' qualifying service
1 January 1986 to 5 April 1988At least 5 years' qualifying service, at any age
From 6 April 1988At least 2 years' qualifying service
From 1 October 2015, money purchase onlyAt least 30 days' qualifying service, where that service began on or after 1 October 2015

If you left after 6 April 1988 with 2 years or more of service, you very likely have a preserved pension, if you were in the scheme.

Sources: the age 26 and 5 year rule, Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16, paragraph 6(1), read 20 October 2026, in force from 6 April 1975 (Social Security Act 1973 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1973, read 20 October 2026). The age condition ended on 1 January 1986 (Social Security Act 1985, section 1, read 20 October 2026, and Social Security Act 1985 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1985, read 20 October 2026). Five years became two with effect from 6 April 1988 (Social Security Act 1973, Schedule 16 as amended, note on the Social Security Act 1986, section 10, read 20 October 2026). Two years today, and 30 days for money purchase service that began on or after 1 October 2015 (Pension Schemes Act 1993, section 71, read 20 October 2026).

The free official route comes first

The UK government's free Pension Tracing Service gives you contact details for a workplace pension scheme from the name of an employer. It has a limit, in its own words: "This service will not tell you whether you have a pension, or what its value is." (Source: GOV.UK, Find pension contact details, read 20 October 2026.)

With an old City bank, the name is the hard part. The name on your payslip is rarely the name on the record today, and a search for the wrong name finds the wrong scheme or nothing you recognise.

Your report names who holds yours today, their contact details, including email where they publish one, and what to send them.

Frequently asked questions

I worked for a local trustee savings bank. Is this my page? Possibly. The 1985 Act reorganised those banks into companies, and which company employed you depends on your years and where you worked. Tell us both when you order.

Is today's TSB the bank I worked for? We do not know. The TSB that Lloyds Banking Group sold in 2015 is named in its filing as TSB Banking Group plc, and we have not read a source that links it to the TSB Bank plc of 1998. Tell us your years and the name on your payslip.

Do you contact the pension scheme for me? No. We identify who holds the pension and give you what to send. You contact them yourself, and the pension stays yours throughout.

Is the government tracing service not enough? It is the right first step, and it costs nothing. It gives a contact for a scheme name you already have. It will not tell you whether you have a pension, and with TSB the name you remember is not the name on the record today.

What if you find nothing? We say so in the report. The refund promise sits next to the order button above.

More of the City's vanished banks: Hill Samuel, Halifax and HBOS, NatWest, and the A to Z of old names.

Try the alternative first

AI can tell you what a pension is. It cannot tell you that you have one. It is genuinely good at explaining how a rule works, and if that is all you needed, you have saved yourself a fee.

Then ask it which scheme holds your money and who administers it today, and ask it for the source and the date it checked. Why that is where it ends
