Where the free route in Austria stops
Nothing arrives by itself. The pension authority states the Antragsprinzip plainly: to receive a pension you must always file an application. The wall is the dating rule. For own pensions the day you file triggers the Stichtag, and the Stichtag is normally the first day of payment: file on the first of a month and that is your date, otherwise it is the first of the following month. There is no earlier start, so every year spent not knowing about the entitlement is simply never paid. The online door is bolted as well. Electronic forms require a qualified signature, ID Austria, and ID Austria registration means appearing in person at an office inside Austria; foreign nationals must also evidence a domestic connection.Source: pv.at, oesterreich.gv.at, id-austria.gv.at, read 3 October 2026

Dated deadlines

Germany, where the pension was built: rows from our deadline register

  • Forfeiture. The small widow's or widower's pension is paid for a maximum of two years after the death of the spouse or partner. Row de-7Source: deutsche-rentenversicherung.de, read 24 September 2026
  • Arrears destroyed. Riester subsidies are clawed back as schaedliche Verwendung where the holder's residence or habitual abode is outside the EU or EEA at the start of the payout phase, unless the Brexit carve out applies. Row de-5Source: finanzamt.nrw.de, read 24 September 2026
  • Application window. A pension from a person's own insurance (old-age, reduced earning capacity, child-raising pension) must be applied for within three months of meeting all the conditions; after a later application the pension normally starts only from the month of application. Germany: The §210 contribution refund irreversibly extinguishes the entire record (old-age, disability, survivor cover, all credited periods), yet with 60 totalized months you may already hold a vested pension; plus the Mütterrente child-raising screen.
