Pension question, Netherlands
How do I apply for AOW from abroad?
SVB tells people living outside the Netherlands to apply for their AOW pension 6 months before reaching AOW pension age. In an EU/EEA or treaty country the application can go to the pension institution of the country of residence (which forwards it) or of the last country of insurance; outside those countries the person must contact SVB directly 6 months ahead.
What to do next
- Note the country you live in now and the last country you were insured in, because either may take the application.
- Have your BSN and the dates you lived in the Netherlands to hand before you contact the pension institution where you live.
- Run our free check to see which pensions your other working years may have left.

Do you give advice on what to do?
No. We identify where a pension is likely held and the official route to it, and we name each source with the date we read it. We do not give financial, tax or legal advice.
