Pension question, Sweden

Can the Swedish pension be paid retroactively?

Swedish national public pension is never paid automatically and can never be backdated: every month of delay in applying is a month of pension that is never received. Pensionsmyndigheten states that the Swedish pension is not paid automatically and cannot be applied for retroactively; payment runs from the month the application reaches the Agency, and an application may be lodged at the earliest one year before the withdrawal age.

  1. Find your Swedish withdrawal age and mark the year before it.

Questions people also ask

Is a survivor's pension backdated?

A surviving spouse's Swedish adjustment pension (omställningspension) or widow's pension (änkepension) is backdated only three months before the application date, so a widow abroad who applies late loses the earlier months permanently.

Do you give advice on what to do?

No. We identify where a pension is likely held and the official route to it, and we name each source with the date we read it. We do not give financial, tax or legal advice.
