Where the free route in Germany stops
Deutsche Rentenversicherung prints the problem itself: the pension does not come automatically when you reach pension age. You must apply, and nobody writes to remind you. To see your insurance record online, registration requires a German identity card with the online identification function activated, a German electronic residence permit with that function activated, or a German electronic signature card. There is no username and password route, all three are German issued, and the same service states that only German signature cards are supported. The system's own prompts never reach a short German career either: the automatic pension information and first insurance record are issued only once you are 27 and have five years of German contributions.Source: deutsche-rentenversicherung.de, read 3 October 2026

Dated deadlines

France, where the pension was built: rows from our deadline register

  • Lost outright. The pension from L'Assurance Retraite must be applied for before the desired departure date, because it is not paid automatically and a late application is not backdated. Row fr-3Source: lassuranceretraite.fr, read 24 September 2026
  • Lost outright. An application to buy back (racheter) quarters for salaried activity worked abroad must be made within 10 years of the end of that activity. Row fr-8Source: lassuranceretraite.fr, read 24 September 2026
  • Arrears destroyed. Money in a dormant bank account can be requested or moved until it is transferred to the Caisse des Depots, and can be requested there until it passes permanently to the State. Row fr-7Source: ciclade.caissedesdepots.fr, read 24 September 2026

Easy to miss

France: The mandatory Agirc-Arrco complementary pension is a separate entitlement from the CNAV base pension (two bodies, two streams), and French pensions are never paid automatically; they must be filed ~5 months ahead.
