Pension questions

United States pension questions

These are the questions people search about a pension left in the United States. Each page answers its question in the first two sentences, and we show those two sentences below, read from the official source with the date we read it. We identify where a pension is likely held and the route to it. We do not give advice.

  • Can I get Social Security if I live abroad?

SSA's handbook states you must file an application to become entitled to benefits. If you are not a US citizen there is a second clock: SSA generally cannot pay Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance benefits after your sixth calendar month outside the United States unless you fall within one of its specific exceptions, several of which turn on your exact nationality and country of residence.

  • How many credits do I need for Social Security?

You need 40 credits to be eligible, you earn up to four credits a year, and in 2026 one credit takes 1,890 dollars of covered earnings, so 40 credits is about ten years of work. Below 40, SSA's own wording is blunt: it cannot pay benefits to you if you do not have enough credits.

  • Do years worked in other countries count towards US Social Security?

If you have at least six US credits, SSA can count your coverage in an agreement country toward the US threshold and pay a partial benefit sized to the share of your career completed in the United States. The route past that is a totalization agreement, and the United States has 31 of them.

  • How far back can Social Security be backdated?

A late application is paid up to six months retroactively, and only at or after full retirement age. Below that age retroactivity is blocked wherever it would permanently cut your monthly amount, so every year of not knowing is simply gone.

  • Do I need to return a Social Security questionnaire if I live abroad?

A Social Security beneficiary living outside the United States who is sent form SSA-7162 must complete and return it to the Wilkes-Barre address within 60 days of receiving it. And once payment starts, SSA posts you a questionnaire every year or every two years depending on your country, with 45 days to answer the second notice before automatic suspension.

  • How do I apply for Social Security from abroad?

Online self-service needs a US Social Security number and an identity check, and SSA does not state what happens if your foreign document or your non US phone number will not pass it. Even with an account working, SSA's own application page sends an overseas applicant off the website.
