Portugal pension questions

These are the questions people search about a pension left in Portugal. Each page answers its question in the first two sentences, and we show those two sentences below, read from the official source with the date we read it. We identify where a pension is likely held and the route to it. We do not give advice.

English

  • How many years do I need for a Portuguese pension?

Portugal pays an old age pension, the pensao de velhice, only to people with 15 calendar years of registered earnings; voluntary insurance needs 144 months. Where Portuguese years alone fall short, Portugal pays a pro rata share: theoretical pension times Portuguese years divided by total years.

  • Do Portuguese pensioners abroad need a proof of life?

A pensioner living abroad must give a prova de vida between 1 May and 15 September each year; from 2027 this binds every pensioner resident abroad, under Decreto-Lei 40/2025. Proof not delivered by the end of September suspends the pension from November 2026 until it is given.

  • Can I use Seguranca Social Direta from abroad?

The self service route is Seguranca Social Direta, which needs a NISS plus a password, a Cartao de Cidadao read by a card reader with its software installed, or a Chave Movel Digital. The password is issued against the address Seguranca Social already holds, with a verification code sent by SMS, email or post in about eight working days.
